A drawing of Four Trees
This is a pencil drawing that I did while I was admitted to a hospital in 1994 for major suicidal depression.  I only had a No.2 pencil to work with. The staff wouldn't let me sharpen the pencil mechanically, so I had to constantly rub the pencil at an angle, until I was able to wear off enough of the graphite to resemble a point.   This drawing has very special meaning for me. The tree in the background, with the broken limb, is me. The tree stands alone, next to an empty pit. The trees in the foreground depict various members of the family. In the lower left forground..the two youngest girls. Just in back of them (and the tallest tree) is my ex-wife. The two other trees in the middle right forground, are my two eldest children. They are moving away on the ground from which they grew. The circle underneath (the detail is fuzzy) is a sphere, surrounded by the roots of the trees. This sphere held the family together. But now, the sphere is cracked...and may be repaired in time. This drawing will remain on my wall as a constant reminder.
