This is the drawing that started it all. This image is just a portion of a much
larger drawing. And sadly, this is the only drawing of this size that I've ever finished. The original
size is 14x20. I started this drawing in 1970. And I believe it took me several months to complete.
But this drawing is when I started putting in the spheres.
The reason I placed them in this drawing, was to re-create an image I saw while I was under the influence of lyseric-acid-diethylamide
(more commonly know as Acid, Double Window Panes, Blotters, Cubes, etc.) This experience took place somewhere around
1969-70. Some high school friends and I went to the country side (which, not so surprisingly, is now a bustling
suburb.) We camped out in a field, on a hill, overlooking a small stream. As the dusk came upon us...and the fire
flies came out to congregated along the stream bed. And what I saw from the hill, a hundred yards away...were these
moving lights next to the stream and millions of stars in the sky. And at that moment, everything seemed right
in the world. And as I use these spheres in new drawings, they have come to symbolize a correctness, or a blessing
if you will, of what you see in the drawing.
All of my spheres now, and then, have basically the same meaning. Whether they are whole...or depicted as damaged.
Well, there you have it, the secret behind the spheres.
