I found that the plastic "nub" that fits into the barrel lug was getting worn off from taking the gun apart and putting it back together.  My stainless ones have a nub that is shaped like the divot in the barrel lug.  When you give it that last push during assembly there is a confidence - inspiring click when it snaps in.  However, I do believe the SIG factory rod should last the reasonable life of the gun, it will just have a messy looking nub and ... well, it's plastic!
