Shiloh Forge Ironware was started in 1994 with a hand-me-down forge rig and a few simple tools. With an eye to keep it simple and a focus on learning traditional smithing techniques*, I set out on a journey of book learning, experimentation, sage advice from other smiths and a few dollars for my first anvil and vise, The goal originally was to make hard or impossible to find custom carving tools for my wood carving habit, but the process of learning to shape iron in the forge took over and extended itself into an overgrown hobby that is actually able to pay for itself.

*There is a lot of discussion among contemporary smiths about what “Traditional” smithing is. To me it is smithing that is done without having to use electric power or gas in the fabrication of forged part. Just my preference, ‘cause I don’ hafta make a livin’ at it.

Knowing the value of a good and proper cutting tool, the process of making blades, including knives and carving tools fascinated me the most. With a little experimentation, a lot of questions and reading, I have been able to make passable knives and cutters for any number of purposes. Many of the best, I have given away or sold and have no visual record of their existence, to my shame.

I have included samples of some of my work, including a few knives and some ornamental efforts.
