Who We Are:

The American Legion Riders are members of the American Legion who are also motorcycle enthusiasts. They can be found participating in parades, partaking in motorcycling events, and supporting the communities in which they live, work, and play. Members of the ALR come from the Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion. The American Legion Riders were formed to...

  • Participate in parades and other ceremonies that are in keeping with the Aims and Purposes of the American legion.

  • To promote motorcycle safety programs and to provide a social atmosphere for American Legion members who share the same interest.

  • To use our Association to promote and support programs of the American Legion through service to our Community, State and Nation.

The American Legion Riders is not a motorcycle club (M/C), and does not practice M/C rules or regulations. The American Legion Riders is family-oriented, just as is its parent organization: the American Legion.

The American Legion Riders Today:

Today the American Legion Riders have grown to nearly 800 Legion Rider programs in virtually every Department and in several overseas areas. Over the last few years, Riders in Iowa have formed an honor guard called The Five Star Freedom Riders. Riders in Mulvane, Kansas, reacting to a religious cult that uses the deaths of military members to further a misguided cause, formed the original “Patriot Guard” to protect and show our respect to the families at military funerals. American Legion Riders in all states have escorted returning military units as they return home from combat tours overseas, and have raised literally millions of dollars for countless local, state, and national charities.

And the Riders have only just started to roll.

Each American Legion Rider Chapter manages its programs at the post level, where all of the best ideas are born in the best American Legion “grass-roots” tradition. Here are only a few examples of the programs and projects of The Riders:

  1. Participation in the annual POW/MIA Rally held each Memorial weekend in Washington D.C. known as "Rolling Thunder".
  2. Participation in annual regional rides such as “Operation Wounded Warrior, sponsored by Riders in Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, California, and several other western states.
  3. Sponsoring or participating in local charity events in support of The American Legion or of the community.
  4. Raising money for such organizations as local VA Hospitals, Women and Children's Centers, Children and youth centers, schools, and many others.
  5. Sponsoring or participating in motorcycle "Runs" to benefit numerous charities, including charities for underprivileged children and medical research, just to name a few.
  6. Participation in local memorial ceremonies and community parades.
  7. Annual participation in The American Legacy Run, a fundraising cross-country run from The American Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the year’s national convention city.
  8. Riding to honor fallen military men and women, and to protect the sanctity of their funerals from those who would dishonor their memory.
  9. Riding escort for military units enroute to departure airfields and airports to combat tours overseas, and welcoming them home upon their return.

Motorcyclists are a very dedicated group of people. When you combine them with The American Legion Family, you create a win/win situation.

Brief History of the ALR:

In the fall of 1993 Chuck (Tramp) Dare shared a dream with the Commander at the American Legion Post 396 in Garden City, Michigan. The idea came about to start a motorcycle association that would operate within the American Legion. The idea was to provide an atmosphere whereas Post, Auxiliary and S.A.L. members, who shared an enthusiasm for motorcycles, could come together. It was meant to be a family oriented group.

They started with just a small group. Within a few months we grew to nineteen members. We worked on developing a set of by-laws to help us to provide structure to our group. They designed an emblem for the American Legion Riders. This emblem, contained within its design, the emblem of the American Legion. This emblem is worn today by Legion Rider groups throughout the country and is available to it's members through and State chapters. In 1996 they had an article published about the American Legion Riders in the American Legion National publication of the "Dispatch". An article in the American Legion Magazine soon followed up this article. In about 1996 "Tramp" moved to Texas, where he did a great job of promoting the Legion Rider program there. Today, there are groups of American Legion Riders throughout the country.

The Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Legion Riders began its planning stages in late 2006.  By February 2007 the chapter was formed with support from American Legion Post 177 and 22 Riders became charter members of the chapter.  The chapter is growing leaps and bounds.  With each monthly meeting and event we see more and more members joining.

Who benefits from forming an American Legion Riders Group?

We all do!!!!  Just because one person wears a leather motorcycle jacket and another wears a golf shirt and slacks, we now know that we can work together to promote the aims and purposes of the American Legion. We have done it, and everyone involved was able to see the benefit. The American Legion Riders was never intended to be a "Motorcycle Club". As stated, it is to be able to work with the Local Post to assist in promoting the American Legion.

The program was designed to have people work together and enjoy themselves. It may be a group of Riders working on a fundraiser for a local charity, it may be just a warm summer evening ride together or maybe just sitting at the Post sharing stories. It's all about members working together and playing together - it is there for them to enjoy.
