Course Description (Major goals and teaching strategies):

The word mathematics comes from the ancient Greek language meaning “the things that are worth knowing”. Too often, students just view mathematics as an exercise in manipulating numbers without seeing any real value to their lives. The goal of this course is to show the student 1) mathematics as problem solving, 2) mathematics as communication, 3) mathematics as reasoning, and 4) mathematics as making connections.

During the year, we will investigate a wide range of sophisticated mathematical topics in a student friendly way. Throughout the program, students learn how to use the complementary mechanisms of graphing calculators and logical reasoning to find and explain answers, to shape and defend their opinions, and to pose and explore new questions.

Students will become better at:

ü  - Using Algebra to model real world situations

ü  - Using technology to describe patterns of data

ü  -  Solving Complex Algebra Equations

ü  - Basic Math Skills

The teaching strategies to be used include:

Ø  Direct Instruction

Ø Cooperative Learning Strategies

Ø One-on-one Direct Instruction

C.     Key Questions: list a sample open-ended, “key” question students will be able to answer by the end of the course:

You notice in today’s newspaper that Filenes is having a 20% off sale. You also have a coupon to Filenes for $10.00 off any winter coat that can be used on regular and sale priced merchandise. Does it matter in what order the computerized register applies both discounts? Give an example. As the Chief Financial Officer of Filenes, write a memo to the data processing department outlining a policy for calculating the net price of an item sold. Remember, the Chief Financial Officer wants to maximize sales revenues.

Assessment Strategies and Grading Policy

Describe how students will be assessed and how grades will be determined*:

Student’s end of term grade will be determined as follows:

Assigned problems for homework must be completed or an Incomplete for the term will be issued.

Exams             40%

Final                20%

Homework      10%

Class work      20%

Term Project    10%

Student’s final grade for the course will be determined as follows:

Students must pass 5 of 8 Chapter Tests or pass the Year End Final, as well as maintain a minimum of a 60% average in order to be promoted.

Final Grade is determined as an average of the 4 marking terms and the Boston Year End Final.

****All students will maintain an assessment portfolio that contains all completed subject  tasks, all exams and other important assignments as determined by the teacher.

Expectations and Extra Help Schedule

Students are expected to come to class prepared (notebooks, writing instruments, books, completed assignments) and ready to learn.

It is the student’s responsibility to see their teacher regarding missed assignments and exams.

This must be done within three (3) days of returning to school.

In addition to HCA’s tutoring program, students are welcome to meet after school with Mr. Harris for extra help. Students should make an appointment to schedule time.

In addition:

Ø  Students are expected to practice punctuality.

Ø  Students should have good attendance.

Ø  Students are expected to participate in whole-class and small group activities.

Ø  Students are expected to develop and practice good study habits.

Ø  Students are expected to adhere to all rules of the computer lab including no food or drinks as well as adhering to lab policies regarding internet access.

Students are expected to return their textbooks and CD’s in good condition. If the student damages or loses their book or CD, the parent/guardian is expected to pay for the damaged/lost item before a replacement will be issued.

Student/Parent Signature Sheet (to be returned to math teacher)

I understand the learning objectives, expectations, damaged/lost book policy and other information included in this syllabus.

Student name (print)                                               Student Signature

Parent or guardian name (print)                   Parent or Guardian

Ø  Students are expected to return their textbooks and CD in good condition. If the student damages or loses the book or CD, the parent/guardian is expected to pay for the damaged/lost item before a replacement will be issued.

Ø  Parents/Guardians and students should sign the syllabus signature sheet.

Students must return this signature sheet to their math teacher as soon as possible.
