Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for the classes?
Send email to FiveStarSalsa@yahoo.com to register. Please give us your full name (and names of every person in your group), so we can put everyone down for the discounted packages. Give us your phone number (optional). Let us know whether you (and each person in your group) are a male or female. We need to know your gender so we can try to keep the classes balanced with equal number of registered male/female. Let us know which classes you would like to sign up for.. Level 1, Level 2, etc...
Remember, we do not accept any new beginners to join the Level 2/Level 3 classes. Students must have at least two months of solid salsa on2 experience before joining the Level 2 classes.

How do I pay for the classes?
Payment is cash only. Total payment is due on the first day of classes.

Do I need to register with a partner?
No. You do not need to bring your own partner. We will rotate partners in class.

What type of clothing and shoes are needed?
Dress comfortable for a workout. Dancing shoes are best. You can wear leather sole shoes if you have them, but not required. For beginner classes, almost any type of shoes will do fine.

Where can we go to buy dancing shoes?
There is a Capezio Dance Shop one block away from Lindt Studio at the (north-east corner) of Broadway & 57th Street. Use the building entrance on Broadway and walk up the stairs to the second floor. Be sure to buy a pair of shoes with suede bottom (leather bottom shoes would be too slippery). You can also get them at the factory outlet in NJ, for a big discount. They have more selections in the store. http://www.dancefactoryoutlet.com/capezio/

What if I have very little dance experience?
Relax.. Our Level 1 classes are designed for New Beginners. No prior dance experience needed. No partner necessary.

Instead of signing up for Level 1, can I sign up for both Level 1 & Level 2, and just pay $20 more?
No. We do not accept any new beginners in our Level 2 classes. You must have at least two months of solid salsa on2 experience, before joining the level 2 classes

Would I be able to drop in on the one day workshop and pay at the door?
It would be best to make a reservation and not just to drop in. We won't be able to accept any new reservation or drop ins once the class is fully booked. Since it is a partner dancing class, We also try our best to keep the classes balanced with equal number of male and female.. Which means we won't be able to register any new ladies into the class if we already have too many ladies in the class, and vice versa. It is always best to book your classes early to reserve your spot.

What is the difference between the discounted and the regular classes?
The discounted price is offered to those who register early (one week before the classes start). The classes are the same classes.

I will be gone for one week in the middle of the course. Would it be possible to make up that class later on? Also, what is your refund policy?
Our policy is.. There are no make up classes and no refund for missed class. However if there is space available in another class (with the same level or lower), and with the instructor's approval, you maybe able to do a make up class for your missed class. Make up classes have to be done in the same cycle.

Is it okay for me to bring a camera to film the turn patterns in the class?
For the comfort of all students in the class and to avoid distractions in the classroom, we do have a policy that no camera is allowed in any of the classrooms.

How many people are in the classes?
Class size ranges from 5 students to 25 students, depending on which class you choose and varies each cycle. For new beginners... If you prefer small size group classes, please let us know and we will recommend you to a small size group class for new beginners.

Can you tell me a little bit about the dance instructor?
The instructor is a professional salsa dancing instructor with over 6 years experience in teaching group classes from Beginners to Advanced Level.

Are Cha Cha classes required if I just want to learn to dance salsa?
Although not required, learning Cha Cha is highly recommended for all salsa dancers. Salsa and Cha Cha always go hand in hand. When you go to most salsa parties in New York, you will find that they always mix in a few Cha Cha songs here and there. When there is a Live Salsa band at almost any event, they also usually mix in a few cha cha songs. Therefore, learning cha cha is a must for salsa dancers. Sign up for the cha cha classes and you would never have to sit out when the cha cha songs are playing again. (For those who go to ballroom parties, they play lots of cha cha there too!!)
