Basic Chroma Key Technique in Photoshop

Select and Delete!
To start the Chroma Key process, we'll use the "magic wand" tool in Photoshop to select the background color. You may not be able to see the tool settings in the toolbar, so I'll fill in the details. In this case, I used a tolerance of 15, anti-ailiased (gives a smooth edge), and contiguous (only adjacent areas).

You will likely have to use the "add to selection" function and click on several areas to get your final selection. Note: Hair, especially a lot of frizzy hair, is a royal pain in the butt. Don't expect that you'll get hair perfect, it will require a degree of clean up work later (maybe a lot).
Notice the hideous color I have selected as the background color in my toolbar. Because that green doesn't even come close to any color value in the image, it's a perfect choice.

Once I have my selection completed, I like to use "Select" "Modify" "Expand" and expand my selection by 1 or 2 pixels, just to be certain I won't have fringing issues later. Having done that, hit the delete key and the background is replaced with the hideous green.

At this stage, I save the image to a new file. That way, I never accidentally permanently alter my original scan.
