HC-110 - A most versatile film developer from The Great Yellow Father

HC-110 is a great general purpose developer for roll and sheet films. Depending upon the dilution used, HC-110 gives results similar to D-76, but comes in a most convenient liquid concentrate.

Kodak instructs us to dilute the entire 16 ounce bottle 1:3 with water to make a stock solution. In my opinion, that's just nuts. HC-110 shines as a one-shot developer - mix what you need, as you need it, then dump it down the drain when you're done. Unless you process a lot of film, and I mean A LOT OF FILM, the stock solution that Kodak would have you mix won't give you anywhere near the shelf life that you'll get out of a bottle of concentrate that you just mix as required.

The one big rule that you must consider when mixing HC-110 is that, regardless of the size of your tank, you need certain minimum amount of concentrate for each 80 square inches of film being processed - i.e. 1 36 exp. roll of 35mm, 1 120 size roll, or for sheet film users - 4 4X5, 2 5X7, or 1 8X10.

Use at least 3ml for the US version, 9.6ml for the Euro version.

Follow that one simple rule to the letter, even if it means you have to use more solution than normal in your tank!

OK, I see the big charts, what about developing times?

Well, I guess that I could put up a table... but I'm not. Instead, I encourage you to check out The Massive Development Chart at digitaltruth.com. My purpose in posting this page was to do the math for you so you don't have to calculate how much syrup and water you need for the various dilutions to make a specific batch size. The folks at digitaltruth.com put a lot of effort into maintaining that development chart, I'd rather not cut and paste their efforts. They have commercial sponsors that care about page hits and the like - visit them!

Euro version of concentrate requires 9.6ml per 36 exp 35mm or equivalent (80 square inches)

NOTES:

Obviously, some rounding of these measurements will be required. 2 decimal precision is provided only as a guide.

Dilutions shown are from syrup straight from the bottle - NOT from stock solution mixed as described by Kodak.

Use at least required minimum concentrate per 36 exposure roll of 35mm film (80 square inches).

Indicates dilutions that do not meet minimum concentrate rule (3ml for US, 9.6ml for Euro).

A 10cc syringe from your local pharmacy is a big help in measuring the syrup, get one!
