Mark Frautschi began working on the Year-2000 Problem (Y2k) in late 1997. This work drew on his whole systems approach as well as his technical strengths. He is interested in the applications of lessons learned beyond the Y2k period. These include issues of developing strategy in an environment of unpredictability (scenario planning), information security and infrastructure assurance. He published articles and shorter pieces on Y2k ranging from the embedded systems problem to Y2k as an issue of gender and leadership, which have been translated into several languages. He consulted internationally with governmental and corporate clients, supported the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, The President's Council on the Year-2000 Conversion and the National Y2k Civic Leadership Initiative. He has made numerous presentations and interviews on issues of strategy as well as the many of the facets of Y2k. (Please see his list of Year-2000 activities for further details.) In August 1999, he joined the Center for Y2K & Society as a Senior Analyst, remaining until that organization ended full-time operations in April 2000.
