GET OUT!...

Life is too short to sit in front of your computer.  So we are taking the advice of a Life is Good t-shirt and "getting out".

Our outdoor interests in the summer are hiking and biking.  In the winter we love to downhill ski.  And we've talked about trying snowshoeing but haven't done it yet.

This summer we are also training to walk - I said walk, not run - the Portland Marathon.  So far, the training schedule has been going well.  As of June 11, 2005 we are on schedule to do our long walk of 10 miles.  Each week we walk one long walk at a moderate speed and 2 shorter walks at a faster pace.  Wish us luck to walk all 26 miles on October 9, 2005.

We will post our current schedule of hiking or biking or skiing around town and the local area.  Want to join us?  Check out this page for updates on what's going on.  Any questions?  Email Gary.  He's the man with the plan.

Sunday, August 8th -- SNOW LAKE HIKE

On this hike we can economize on time for a limited Sunday afternoon. So we can do a relatively short drive to Snoqualmie Pass and a moderate length hike.

The feedback I've received from others say this is a great hike and it is really beautiful. I'm looking forward to it.

Please look at the following link describing the hike.
http://www.wta.org/~wta/cgi-bin/wtaweb.pl?3+tg+fetch+english+1096

Here's the Critical Information
Meeting Location: Alpental Ski Area parking lot.
When: Sunday August 8th.
Meeting time: 2pm.
Hike Starts: 2:15pm
Distance: 8 miles, round trip. Just to Snow Lake I believe it's shorter. I'll buy a map and check it out.
Time Estimate: 4 to 5 hours.

What to bring.
For the serious mountaineer (see http://www.mountaineers.org/) there are the "10 Essentials".
1. Navigation (map and compass)
2. Sun protection
3. Insulation (extra clothing)
4. Illumination (flashlight/headlamp)
5. First-aid supplies
6. Fire.
7. Repair kit and tools.
8. Nutrition (extra food)
9. Hydration (extra water)
10. Emergency shelter

Since this is a day hike on a well travelled route use the above list at your discretion. But also consider these.
a. Extra shoes/socks. Change into sturdy shoes at the trailhead.
b. Soft backpack for carrying your essentials.
c. First Aid also including bug spray and sun block.
d. Emergency shelter can be a lightweight personal size thermal/plastic cover that you can get at REI for 5 bucks.
e. An extra plastic bag to pack out any garbage.
f. Food and Water.

I read a recent report that bugs are bad in this location. Definitely bring "Off" or something like it.

Nourishment.
I'm sure you are too, but usually right after church I'm starving. We have two options. We can stop along the way for a bite on the go. Or, preferred, is to pack extra sandwiches to eat on the drive to the trail head. Pack snacks for the trail, of course, but it's a good idea to eat something before we start.

Carpooling and Fees
A Park Pass is required. A day pass costs $5 per carload. I don't think there is a money changer so bring a $5 bill. Consider carpooling with someone to save on gas and pass fees. We can make carpooling arrangements from the community center/church parking lot. If you want to carpool or just drive in separate vehicles and caravan, meet in the Old Redmond Schoolhouse (Community Center) parking lot at 12:50pm and be ready to roll at 1pm.

What if it rains?
It would have to be a pretty heavy downpour to cancel this activity. We live in the Pacific Northwest where rain happens. A light drizzle will keep us cool so if the weather looks to be drizzles, bring a lightweight water repellant jacket.

Please check back on this web page for any updates.

If you cannot make it.
No worries. We plan on doing hiking and biking throughout the Summer and Fall as weather permits. Just check back for upcoming activities on this page and join us next time!
