Standards and Education will hold a public hearing.

URGENT ACTION REQUESTED!
You have seen the posted Task Force Recommendations, that were made at the August
7th 2006 Board meeting. The Indiana Board of Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education agreed
these recommendations needed to be added to update the Mandatory.
However the Board also agreed that NO action will be taken until a permanent funding source
is established and All of the Training Districts are up and running.
YOUR URGENT ACTION IS
REQUESTED to contact your local state Legislators and inform them of the needed updated firefighter training and that a “PERMANENT”
FUNDING SOURCE be Established to fund these updates.
DON’T WAIT CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS TODAY!
Task Force "Proposal" Increasing the minimum training
for Firefighters is as follows:
*A Minimum of Firefighter I, including, Records, Laws, Driving, Laws Regarding
Emergency Vehicle Operation/Driving,
Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Material Operations level, Firefighter Survival, ICS, CPR,
SIDS, Infection Control, and Bleeding & Shock management, National Incident Command System (NIMS).
This will then bring the initial Indiana Firefighter Training into compliance with, NFPA 1001,
NFPA 1403, and IOSHA Training Standards.
In addition these changes will also assist in compliance with the National Incident Command
System, and enforces the National Fallen Firefighter
Foundation's 16 Life Safety Initiatives for National Certified Training Requirements.
PLEASE NOTE: A Permanent Funding Source is being
pursued!

for Fire Officers are as follows:
Tactics, ICS, NIMS, NFPA 1403 Compliance Training!
PLEASE NOTE: A Permanent Funding Source is being
pursued!
Task Force "Proposal" Recertification / Continuing Education for Firefighters
include the following:
All Firefighters must obtain written documentation,
on a continuing education form, a minimum of twelve (12) performance based, skills, per year, for a two year / 24 month reporting
period, taken from NFPA 1001, 2002 edition.
The
Chief of each department shall choose each skill or skills from the NFPA 1001, 2002 edition, and document said skills on each
firefighters continuing education form.
Additional tactical style skills for all officers, dealing with their perspective duties
is also under consideration.

FACTS:
FACT:
Indiana OSHA, (IOSHA) requires all firefighting personnel “Prior to getting on a Fire Truck and
functioning as a Firefighter” to be trained in the following: Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations, ICS, Infection
Control, SIDS, CPR, Bleeding and Shock management, Records, Laws, Driving, and Emergency Vehicle Driving Laws.

FACT:
NFPA
1403, (Live Fire Training Standard) Requires ALL Firefighters, Prior to participating in live fire training, to be trained
to a minimum level of Firefighter I.

FACT:
In the event a firefighter, or civilian, is injured, or killed, during a training exercise, or emergency. During litigation,
you and your department can be held liable for not meeting NFPA and OSHA standards, regardless of the Indiana state requirements.
