Firefighters Scared Straight - Billy Goldfeder - Nov. 4th, 2009 - NOTE DATE CHANGE!

PLEASE REGISTER AT www.indianafiretraining.com

COURSE COST $50/Person - FOOLS Members $40/Person

"Firefighter Close Calls"... "Scared Straight".... "Structural Firefighting-LESSONS LEARNED"... and related FIRE COMMAND & FIREFIGHTER/ FIREGROUND SAFETY PROGRAMS Chief Goldfeder will present the classroom version of "CLOSE CALLS" (aka "Fireground Injury and Death: Tragic Events and Related Firefighter Close Calls")

The class is taught by Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder, E.F.O., Loveland-Symmes, Ohio, Fire Department. Contributing Editor/Columist: Firehouse, Fire-Rescue & Fire Engineering Magazines. Updated annually, as well as when incidents present new learning opportunities, the program can be done for a half or a full day of training.

Chief Billy G. will present to the attendees, through incredible video, audio, slides and "WAKE UP" lecture, an in-depth review of specific fireground events and most specifically, the LESSONS LEARNED so that these incidents (and those involved) don't ever become forgotten. Attended by thousands of firefighters and fire officers since 2000, this high energy class provides the attendees an excellent opportunity to apply the LESSONS LEARNED to their own departments when returning home...potentially avoiding "history tragically repeating itself".

The goal of the program is to have Firefighters, Officers and Elected Officials leave more knowledgeable, educated and informed but most importantly thinking HARD about their role and the department's responsibility in STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTING!

The subject matter all relates to STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTING and their "lessons learned".

If you have a SINGLE building with engineered lumber in it you need your firefighters to take the hour to watch this presentation from Underwriters Labs;

LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION

Last year, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) received a fire grant from the DHS to do a research study on lightweight construction.  UL conducted a series of tests, and just this month posted the results of their study titled "Structural Stability of Engineered Lumber in Fire Conditions" on their UL University website http://www.uluniver sity.us/home. aspx

This is a great online course, free of charge available to all.  This course is essential for all firefighters and an absolute must for all ICs and FSOs across our land. It is only 52 minutes long, but it is absolutely worth it.

No, this course isn't just a bunch of technical jargon designed for engineers with thick glasses and pocket protectors (yours truly included!).  It is a great hands on course that shows the actual firefighting challenges in these lightweight construction infernos.

They did six tests and videotaped them all, and had two firefighter mannequins (dummies) in full gear with Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC) on these test floor and roof assemblies. Watch the videos and see if you can predict when the dummies will fall through.

It is also interesting to see that the difference in the temperature reading of the TIC at the top assembly compared to the inferno below.  In one test after 5 minutes, the TIC temperature showed a comfortable 73 degrees on the floor level above the fire, while below the temperature was 1378 degrees.  Not that the TIC was not working and reading accurate temperatures, but because the flooring and carpets do not transfer that temperature, so the TIC doesn't see it.

Bottom line is that the lightweight construction, increased fuel load, and the synthetic petroleum based materials, contribute to much greater fire growth and presents significant challenges to our firefighters.  Please take the time to educate yourself and the staff under your command.  The lives that they save, could be their own.  Take care.

Thanks

Lt. John Shafer
