Germanicus was the brother of Claudius I and the nephew of Tiberius. He was adopted by Tiberius as his heir, making him next in line for the throne. He died mysteriously in the East, supposedly by poisoning. The fact that his death paved the way for his son, the notorious Caligula, to become next in line adds to the mystery.
