Gordian III, known as “the Boy Emperor,” was 13 years old when he became emperor. His rule was successful and just, largely due to the influence of his adviser, Timesithius. But after the death of Timesitheus in A.D. 243, the still teen-aged Gordian was easy prey for the scheming Philip I, who turned the army against him. To this day Gordian’s death is surrounded in mystery, and few believe Philip’s assertion to the Senate that he died a natural death.
