Scooba's SERIAL CONNECTOR

Last modified:

SERIAL-CONNECTOR LOCATION AND TYPE

Not a great deal can be said about Scooba's serial port; however, its location will be of interest to a certain sub-set of Scooba owners. Figures 1 and 2 reveal that the serial-connector's location is on the front wall of what may be termed The Tank Well.

With that connector placement, it should be quickly apparent to anyone interested in providing customized commands to Scooba, that implementation of such plans has been made very difficult! When the Tank Assembly has been latched into its working position, there is no possibility of leaving a plug-cap mated to the chassis-connector.

Figure 3. Miniature DIN Connector -- Detail

Figure 3 tells us that Scooba uses the same seven-contact, Mini-DIN connector as found on the Discovery series of floor-vacs. No other information about this port is known to have been published -- at this time.

There is a little more information, regarding the physical and electrical interfaces of this connector to the robot. A view of the underside of the PWB within the Control-Panel Module is given in Figure 4.

The connector's physical mounting to the card is seen at upper right in the photo. No effort has been devoted to learning what happens to the serial stream on that PWB, i.e., is the conversion to parallel done there, or is the serial line carried across the board and into the ribbon cable, which connects to the main control PWB?
