BEYOND SOUTH TO THE SOUTH (MACPHERSON LISTINGS ONLY)

Some of the following listings had the same name or almost the same name as listings of MacPherson's on east-west streets in Southwark; since MacPherson often double-listed corner properties (that is, gave the property a number on each street) this suggests the possibility that the double-listed properties in this section were at corners, but without further evidence these are only suggestions of possibilities, to point the way for future research.

The following 1791 listings line up with the 1785 listings that follow them, but there are no matches, which means it's not certain yet which addresses align with which.

(1791) #187 S. 3rd St., Franklin, Thomas, merchant
(1791) #189 S. 3rd St., Kean, John, Commissioner at the Office for Settling Accounts between the United States and Individual States, on list at end

(1791) #213 S. 3rd St., Clark, Peter, schoolmaster
(1791) #213 S. 3rd St., Preshel, Leonard, baker

(1791) #251 S. 3rd St., Lackay, Marmaduke, plasterer
(1791) #251 S. 3rd St., Rippey, Nathaniel, labourer
It's not clear what's going on with this listing. #245 matches up; so does #253, probably, and #249 is a possibility based on the assonance of the surnames. But there's no 1785 number for this listing. It's possible that Mary Richards wasn't the Widow Richards in question, Richards not being all that uncommon a last name, or that she moved to the place next door between 1785 and 1791.

(1785) #570, Richards, Widow
(1791) #253 S. 3rd St., Richards, Mary, spinster

The western corners of 3rd and Lombard have Lombard addresses, and so it is not certain which side of Lombard these addresses were on:

(1791) #196 S. 3rd St., Pickle, Nicholas, blacksmith, also at 114 Cedar St.
(1791) #194 S. 3rd St., Barrey, John, schoolmaster
(1791) #184 S. 3rd St., Claypoole, Mary, widow

CORNER OF 3RD AND LOMBARD

(1785) #531 3rd Street, #297 Lombard Street, Rodman, Gilbert
By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #177 S. 3rd St., Smith, Charles, coach maker
This alignment is speculative.

(1785) #533 3rd Street, Bardin, Stephen
(1785) #35 Lombard Street, Barron, Stephen
(1785) Bardon, Stephen, grocer, corner of Lombard and 3rd
There was also a listing in White for Stephen Bardin as being between South and Lombard, but this listing is confirmed as being at the corner by the double-listing and the double-listing of the adjacent listing. There's also a jeweler named Stephen Bardon a block away at the corner of 3rd and South Streets.
By the numbering, on the southeastern corner.
(1791) #185 S. 3rd St., Pleasants, Israel, merchant
This alignment is speculative.

(1785) #625 3rd Street, #36 Lombard Street, Peel, Charles
(1785) Peale, Charles Wilson, painter and limner, corner of Lombard and 3rd
By the numbering, on the southwestern corner.
(1791) #62 Lombard Street, Peale, Charles Wilson, limner

By the numbering, on the northwestern corner.

(1785) Darby, Daniel, captain, corner of Lombard and 3rd

BETWEEN LOMBARD AND PINE, EAST SIDE (going south)

The presence of this listing on this block is a guess:

(1785) #530, McGaw, Samuel, reverend
(1785) McGaw, Samuel, Reverend, minister, 3rd near Lombard
(1791) #175 S. 3rd St., Gordon, Mrs., schoolmistress

CORNER OF 3RD AND PINE

(1785) #633 3rd Street, #284 Pine Street, Snowden, John
(1785) Snowden, John, shopkeeper, corner of Pine and 3rd
By the numbering, on the northwestern corner. This is the c.1776 house now known as the Kosciusko house, because Thaddeus Kosciusko (of Revolutionary War fame) stayed here in 1797-98 when it was a boardinghouse.
(1791) #174 S. 3rd St., Roberts, Edward, blacksmith
It's not clear why there isn't a more significant jump in numbers in Biddle's system, here, from #174 at the corner (if it was there) to #178, which is the next number. This would mean St. Peter's and its churchyard was represented only by one number, #176.

The southwestern corner of this intersection was and is occupied by St. Peter's Church and its churchyard.

BETWEEN PINE AND UNION, EAST SIDE (going south)

(1785) #523, Stamper, Joseph
(1785) Stamper, Mrs., 3rd between Pine and Union

(1785) #639, Wistar, Hannah
(1791) #162 S. 3rd St., Wister, William, merchant
(modern) #330 S. 3rd Street
Elizabeth B. McCall's Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill includes a section on this building. The following information is all taken from that source. It was "built by John Hall and his wife Isabel, probably between 1771 and 1774" because the 1774 description in the insurance policy from the Philadelphia Contributionship matches the existing house. It was bought by William Wister in 1778, "who lived there until after the death of his father, John Wister, in 1789" and the house remained in the Wister family until 1853. "[T]he flooring and small stair rail are relics from Chaulkley Hall, a handsome mansion destroyed some years ago." The house was restored by Robert Trump.

(1785) #640, Mease, John
(1785) Mease, John, schoolmaster, 3rd between Pine and Union
(1791) #160 S. 3rd St., Cuthbert, Samuel, gentleman
(modern) #328 S. 3rd St.
Elizabeth B. McCall's Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill includes a section on this building, which it calls the Little House. It was built by John Piles in 1771 on land purchased from the Reverend Jacob Duche, rector of St. Peter's Church, and insured by the Philadelphia Contributionship. Piles apparently owned the house until his death, renting it out, and his widow sold it in 1804 to one Bernard Ferris, a flour merchant. Ferris' widow sold it to one John Mohr in 1861, and the Mohr family owned it until 1907.

(1785) #641, Thorn, William
(1791) #158 S. 3rd St., Henderson, David, blacksmith, also at 24 S. 3rd St.

CORNER OF 3RD AND UNION

(1785) #520 3rd Street, #84 Union Street, Hall, John
(1785) Hall, John, carpenter, corner of Union and 3rd
On the northeastern corner; this house still stands.
(1791) #153 S. 3rd St., Shee, John, Esq., city treasurer
The 1791 number of this address ought to be #155, but there is no #155 in the 1791 directory, so John Shee of #153 has been tentatively placed here.

(1785) #522 3rd Street, McKean, Thomas, Chief-Justice of the Supreme Court
For no apparent reason, not listed by address in White, while many other important officials
were so listed. On the southeastern corner.
(1791) #157 S. 3rd St., McKean, Thomas, Esq. L.L.D., chief justice of the state

(1785) #642 3rd Street, Adams & McGarraghar

Apparently at the southwestern corner.
(1791) #156 S. 3rd St., McCarraher, Daniel, blacksmith, also at 80 Union St.

The jump in numbering on both 3rd and Union Streets in 1785, and the jump from #144 to #156 in 1791, suggests that the northwestern corner and a piece of land adjoining it to the north, was vacant.

(1785) McLaine, John, grocer, corner of Union and 3rd

By the numbering, on the northwestern corner. By 1788 the property had been bought by William Bingham for the grand house he built there that year, so the lumber merchants were gone.

BETWEEN SPRUCE AND WALNUT, EAST SIDE (going south)

Why Biddle did not provide listings for these first three addresses is a mystery. The houses could have been torn down, or been occupied by black people. And no one knows what Biddle did if no one answered the door or would not provide their names.

BETWEEN SPRUCE AND WALNUT, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1791) #122 S. 3rd St., Bingham, William, Esq., speaker of the House of Representatives of the State
Bingham's house, when finished in 1788, was one of the grandest in America, as well as one of the most fashionable. It sat in the middle of a property which took up most of the southern half of this entire block. It's shown in one of William Birch's views of 1798-1800. Bingham's mansion, according to
Elizabeth B. McCall's Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill, later became the Washington Benevolent Society, where Lafayette once attended a banquet for William Rush, U.S. ambassador to England, and was destroyed by a fire in 1823.

The same source includes a section on the buildings at (modern) #258, #260 and #262 S. 3rd Street, built on part of the Bingham mansion grounds, which were built between 1830 and 1839, and in 1849 purchased by Michel Bouvier, the great-great-grandfather of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (etc.), who was, of course, the wife of President John F. Kennedy.

(1785) #664, Powel, Samuel, gentleman
(1785) Powell, Samuel, Esq., gentleman, 3rd between Spruce and Walnut
The Powel house, as it is usually known, is the finest surviving pre-Revolutionary home in Philadelphia; its modern address is 244 S. 3rd Street, and being owned by the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, it's open to the public. It was built in 1765 on a lot running 60 feet on 3rd Street and extending the entire block to 4th Street, 396 feet, though the house itself is 31 feet on 3rd Street and 46 feet deep. It was built for merchant and ship's master Charles Stedman (1713-1784), who then overreached himself financially, and sold it in 1769 to Samuel Powel. Powel (1738-1793) married Elizabeth Willing (1742-1830) five days after his purchase; his new wife was the sister of Thomas Willing (1731-1821) who lived two doors to the north; this proximity must have been a significant factor in the choice of home for the couple. Powel was the last of the city's colonial mayors and its first mayor after we became a nation. The property was owned by the Powels until Samuel's death from yellow fever in 1793, after which Elizabeth sold it to William Bingham, who lived at the next address to the south. By that time (beginning in 1791) it was numbered #112 S. 3rd Street, and after the numbering system changed with Consolidation in 1854, it became #258 and then #244 S. 3rd.
(1791) #112 S. 3rd St., Powell, Samuel, Esq., [state senator for Philadelphia county]
This house is shown in the same one of Birch's views (1798-1800) as the Bingham house at #122.

At the time it was first advertised for sale, in 1766, it had a stable as far away from the house as possible, fronting on 4th Street, which was advertised as being 26' by 20' and two stories high.

This property was exhaustively covered by George Tatum in his book Philadelphia Georgian: The City House of Samuel Powel and Some of its Eighteenth-Century Neighbors. Most of the foregoing information is from that source. Other photos appear in
Elizabeth B. McCall's Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill which includes a section on this building.

(1785) #668, Chew, Benjamin, gentleman
(1785) Chew, Benjamin, Esq., gentleman, 3rd between Spruce and Walnut
In a 1766 advertisement for sale for what became the Powel house at #664, above, #668 was described as where the Governor of Pennsylvania lived. (From Tatum, Philadelphia Georgian; see Bibliography).
(1791) #110 S. 3rd St., Chew, Benjamin, Esq.,

(1785) #671, Willing, Thomas, Director of the Bank
Thomas Willing (1731-1821) was one of the most prominent 18th century Philadelphians; his partner was financier and signer of the Declaration of Independence Robert Morris. His sister Elizabeth (1742-1830) married Samuel Powel (see #664) on August 7, 1769, just before Powel bought a grand house two doors away from Thomas Willing.
(1791) #100 S. 3rd St., Willing, Thomas, Esq., president of the bank of North America
This was at the southwestern corner of 3rd Street and Willing's Alley.

(1791) #88 S. 3rd St., Speile, John, baker

(1785) #680, Cato
(1791) #86 S. 3rd St., no listing
Cato was probably a free black man, and thus would not have been listed by Biddle.

(1785) #681, McIntosh, Donald
(1791) #84 S. 3rd St., Davison, John, grocer
(1791) #84 S. 3rd St., Wigton, John, schoolmaster

CORNER OF 3RD AND WALNUT

(1785) #487 3rd Street, vacant or residents would not give name
(1785) #488 3rd Street, vacant or residents would not give name
These two listings are bracketed by matched-up listings for the blocks on either side of this corner (Walnut/Chestnut and Spruce/Walnut), which suggests that they were on the northeastern and southeastern corners, respectively. Supporting this, the Walnut Street number of the southeastern corner would have been #39 or #40 Walnut Street (based on the presence at the southwestern corner of William Lewis, #41 Walnut Street) and both the 3rd Street and Walnut Street (#39) listings for this corner were "vacant or residents would not give name."

(1785) #682 3rd Street, #41 Walnut Street, Lewis, William, attorney at law
(1785) Lewis, William, Esq., counsellor at law, corner of Walnut and 3rd
By the numbering, on the southwestern corner. This is confirmed by much evidence. This house, demolished in the early 19th century, was "Fort Wilson"-- that is, the site of an attack on the house, then occupied by signer of the Declaration of Independence James Wilson, by a mob, which was repelled by musket fire which killed several. A historical plaque on the 20th century residential building there now marks the house, and the event.
(1791) #82 S. 3rd St., Lewis, William, Esq., attorney for the United States for the district of Pennsylvania

(1785) #684 3rd Street, #276 Walnut Street, Hamilton, Widow
(1785) Hamilton, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Walnut and 3rd
On the northwestern corner.
(1791) #80 S. 3rd St., Hamilton, Abigail, gentlewoman

(1785) #277 Walnut Street, Hobbard, Widow. Oddly, the probable address for the northeastern corner is not also double-listed as "vacant or residents would not give name" which one might expect from a matchup with #487, and there is a jump in the 1791 numbers from #87 to #109, apparently skipping the eastern corners of this intersection entirely. One wonders, however, if she went to the cupboard to get her poor dog a bone. :-D

CORNER OF 3RD AND CHESTNUT

(1785) #464 3rd Street, #347 Chestnut Street, Israel, Israel
(1785) Israel, Israel, sign Cross Keys, corner of Chestnut and 3rd
By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #35 S. 3rd St., Feild, Peter, taylor
This corner was the site (and likely the same building) of the One Tun tavern, which Joseph Ogden ran between 1767 and 1771, according to Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson. (pp.67-73) Thompson devotes a number of pages to the One Tun, which the book should be purchased for even if for no other reason, because its ledgers survive and provide a fascinating view of an 18th century Philadelphia tavern. The city-landscape aspect, however, which is this website's main focus, is that it was 20 feet on Chestnut Street and 40 feet deep on 3rd Street.

(1785) #465 3rd Street, #63 Chestnut Street, Clinton, Widow
(1785) Clinton, Mrs., boardinghouse, corner of Chestnut and 3rd

This alignment is speculative.

BETWEEN CHESTNUT AND MARKET, EAST SIDE (going south)

A painting of between 1817 and 1825 of a stretch of this block (including Judd's Hotel, the existence dates of which date the painting) is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This shows #19 to #31 S. 3rd St., odd numbers, as they appeared in about 1820. This painting is discussed and illustrated in Philadelphia: Three Centuries of American Art, pp.248-249.

(1785) #443, Fougharty, Mary
(1791) #1 S. 3rd St., Campbell, Duncan, cordwainer
This situation is not yet clear. Either #444 (below) encompassed both #3 and #5 in Clement Biddle's mind, or this listing (#443) was actually #3, in which case Duncan Campbell at #1 S. 3rd was at the corner where Robert Smith had been in 1785. More information should clear this up.

(1785) #444, Dorsey, Benedict

(p.86-87) In the Revolutionary unrest of the early 1770s, the "halfway men" or moderates in the St. George's Society met at the Bunch of Grapes; the radicals met at the City Tavern and the loyalists met out of town. (pp.161-162) In 1790, one William Geisse announced that he had booked a noted waxworks for display at the Bunch of Grapes, including likenesses of George Washington, the British royal family, etc. (p.189)

(1785) #22, Clarkson, Mathew, State Lottery Office
(1785) Clarkson, Matthew, Esq., merchant, 3rd between Market and Arch
Matthew Clarkson (1733-1800) was quite a prominent Philadelphian of the 18th century. Born in New York, he was brought to Philadelphia by his stepfather, the Reverend Gilbert Tennent, who became pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in 1743, and his mother, Cornelia (De Peyster) Clarkson Tennent. He married one Mary Boude in 1758, and they had seven children. By the time the Directories were published he had already been Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, Quarter Sessions, and Orphans Court, Quartermaster of the First Battalion of Associators, Marshall of the Admiralty for Pennsylvania, Clerk of the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss By Fire, and, the year previous to the Directories, one of the founding members of the Mutual Assurance Company, the insurance company best known as the Green Tree after its symbol. Later he was Alderman of Philadelphia and Mayor, between 1792 and 1795.
(1791) #42 N. 3rd St., Fell, Richard, grocer

One of Matthew Clarkson's seven children was named Matthew, born in 1761, and it is possible that he was the one who lived at #22 3rd Street; the elder Clarkson did own a house on the north side of Arch between 3rd and 4th Streets (#323) which was insured by the Mutual Assurance Company, where he lived from at least 1791 to his death in 1800. It does make one wonder that a twenty-four-year-old would be running the State Lottery Office and be called "Esquire," (a term then given to wealthy men, not to lawyers) but times were different then. It is also possible that this address was only that of the State Lottery Office.

The foregoing information is from Anthony Garvan's The Mutual Assurance Company Papers, Vol. 1: The Architectural Surveys, 1784-1794, p.36.

CORNER OF 3RD AND VINE

(1785) #348 3rd Street, #414 Vine Street, Griffith, Widow
By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #171 N. 3rd St., Hawk, Mary, schoolmistress

(1785) #349 3rd Street, #61 Vine Street, Weiss, Philip
(1785) Weiss, George, grain trader, corner of Vine and 3rd
His double-listing, as well as the double-listing of the adjacent 3rd Street address of the Widow Griffith, makes it fairly certain that this address was at the southeastern corner. A George Weiss-- that is, a perfect match for the name White gives for the corner of 3rd and Vine-- is listed at #363 3rd Street, but several matched-up listings for the block between Race and Vine bracket #363, strong evidence that it too was between Race and Vine. It seems likely that either MacPherson took down the wrong first name, or that the full name was Philip George Weiss (or vice versa; middle names were not uncommon among the Pennsylvania Germans) or that Philip and George both occupied this corner (and perhaps #363 as well). By the numbering, it was on the southeastern corner. The next highest Vine Street number is #67, which suggests that the southwestern corner (which would ordinarily have been #62 or #63) was vacant.
(1791) #169 N. 3rd St., Weiss, Philip, trader

(1785) #413 Vine Street, Dickinson, Joseph
His presence at the northwestern corner is conjectural, based on the numerical progression for the Vine Street numbers and the Widow Griffith of #414 being at the northeastern corner. No Dickinsons appear in the 3rd Street listings for MacPherson.
(1791) #110 N. 3rd St., Roland & Denckla, shopkeepers
(1791) #110 N. 3rd St., Roland, George W., shopkeeper
These numbers are in about the right place in the 1791 sequence to have been on the northwestern corner.

(1785) Zerban, Vendell, tanner and currier, corner of Vine and 3rd

BEYOND CALLOWHILL TO THE NORTH

These listings include those on the west side of 3rd between Vine and Callowhill, and perhaps some between Race and Vine on the same side. Some of the following listings had the same name or almost the same name as listings of MacPherson's on east-west streets in the Northern Liberties; since MacPherson often double-listed corner properties (that is, gave the property a number on each street) this suggests the possibility that the double-listed properties in this section were at corners, but without further evidence these are only suggestions of possibilities, to point the way for future research.

(1785) #128, Scull, Samuel

(1785) #152, Millis, John
This alignment is extremely tenuous, based on a vague similarity in the last names and the listings being in about the right place and on the same side of the street.
(1791) #344 N. 3rd St., Miller, John Frederick, cordwainer

The following listings occupy the same geographical space in their respective directories, but don't match up.

(1785) #170, Close, Devault
(1791) #390 N. 3rd St., Klosz, Theobald, carpenter
How one could get "Devault" from "Theobald" is a mystery, but the last name is just how an Anglophone might spell Klosz, and they're in about the same place; thus, this alignment.
