4th Street

CORNER OF 4TH AND SOUTH

(1785) North, John, house carpenter, corner of South and 4th

BETWEEN SOUTH AND LOMBARD

(1790 census) Wilson, Margret. This is the final person listed on the west side of S. 4th St. in the 1790 census, just after Philip Young of #196. She and her family might have lived with Young as a boarder, or might have had their own place just north of the southern boundary of the city at South Street.

CORNER OF 4TH AND LOMBARD

(1785) #366, Ledwith, Luke
(1785) Ludwig, Luke, sign Golden Fleece, corner of Lombard and 4th
By the jump in numbering from #349 to #366, Ludwig was probably on one of the western corners.
(1791) #196 S. 4th St., Young, Philip

BETWEEN LOMBARD AND PINE, EAST SIDE (going south)

(1785) #345, vacant or residents would not give name
(1785) #349, Bedford, Gunning

BETWEEN LOMBARD AND PINE, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1785) #373, Hofferman, Godfrey
(1785) Hoffman, Godfrey, cabinetmaker, 4th between Lombard and Pine
(1791) #184 S. 4th St., Standford, Elizabeth
This alignment is speculative.

(1790 census) #182 S. 4th St., "Blacks," nine "all other [i.e. non-white] free persons."

(1791) #170 S. 4th St., Wetherill, Joseph, lumber merchant

BETWEEN LOMBARD AND PINE, UNKNOWN SIDE

No listings.

CORNER OF 4TH AND PINE

(1785) #343 4th Street, #266 Pine Street, Stride, Joseph, painter
(1785) Stride, Joseph, painter, corner of Pine and 4th
By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #93 S. 4th St., no listing.
By counting from the next matchup northward.

(1785) #344, Sheafly, John
By implication of #343, on the southeastern corner. It's possible, though, that #345 was on the southeastern corner.
(1791) #95 S. 4th St., Faris, Bernard, gentleman
By counting from the next matchup northward.

(1785) #379, Claypoole, Widow
(1785) Claypoole, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Pine and 4th
By the numbering, on one of the western corners.
(1791) #166 S. 4th St., Barron, John, Esq.

(1785) #378, no listing
(1791) #168 S. 4th St., Trueman, Richard, lumber merchant
The number would imply this address was on the southwestern corner.

BETWEEN PINE AND UNION, EAST SIDE (going south)

The location of the following two listings is conjectural; certainly they were on the east side of 4th between Pine and Spruce, but whether they were north or south of Union Street (now Delancey) is unknown:

(1785) #341, Boulague, Frederick
(1791) #89 S. 4th St., Scott, George, accomptant

(1785) #342, Williams, Jane
(1791) #91 S. 4th St., Worrell, Mrs., gentlewoman

BETWEEN PINE AND UNION, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1785) Pancake, Philip, grocer, 4th between Pine and Union
(1791) #160 S. 4th St., Pancake, Philip, grocer

(1785) #382, no listing
(1790 census) #158 S. 4th St., "Blacks," four "all other [i.e. non-white] free persons."
(1791) #158 S. 4th St., no listing
This address might have been between Union and Spruce.

BETWEEN PINE AND UNION, UNKNOWN SIDE

(1785) Bullinger, Thomas, merchant, 4th between Pine and Union
(1785) Smith, Frederick, gentleman, 4th between Pine and Union
(1785) Williams, Francis, clerk, 4th between Pine and Union
(1785) Winnemore, Jacob, cabinetmaker, 4th between Pine and Union

CORNER OF 4TH AND UNION

No listings.

BETWEEN UNION AND SPRUCE, EAST SIDE (going south)

For some reason the first two 1785 listings have no counterpart in the 1791 numbering series; the 1785 numbering jumps from #299 to #328, but the 1791 numbering does not, going from #75 to #77.

(1785) #328, Hill, Francis

(1785) #330, Barron, John, gentleman
(1785) Barham, John, Esq., gentleman, 4th between Union and Spruce

(1785) Gordon, Mrs., gentlewoman, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1791) #79 S. 4th St., Hill, Henry, Esq.
(modern) #321 S. 4th St.
This address was where wine merchant Henry Hill built his grand mansion in 1786. Today known as the Hill-Physick-Keith house, it still exists, has been restored and is occasionally open to tours. Elizabeth B. McCall's Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill includes a section on this building.

(1785) #337, McDowall, William
(1785) McDowell, William, house carpenter, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1791) #81 S. 4th St., McDowell, William, carpenter

(1785) #386, Wells, Frederick
(1785) Wells, Frederick, cordwainer, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1791) #150 S. 4th St., Ogden, Charles, schoolmaster

(1790 census) #148 S. 4th St., "Blacks," consisting of 7 "other [i.e. non-white] free persons."
This particular kind of listing is fascinating for the black-history aspect, but also for the fact that the houses were actually given their numbers by 1790, the year before the 1791 directory came out.

(1785) #388, Horn, Henry
(1791) #146 S. 4th St., Steinfield, Thomas, grocer

(1785) #396, Green, Michael
(1785) Green, Michael, grocer, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1790 census) Green, Michal, grocer.
(1791) #134 S. 4th St., Green, Michael, grocer
The census also lists people living at "Back of #134" but doesn't give their name.

(1785) #398, vacant or residents would not give name
(1790 census) Baker, Bartley, joiner
(1791) #132 S. 4th St., Baker, Bartley, joiner
The census also lists people living at "Back of #132" but doesn't give their name.

(1785) #399, Smith, Frederick
(1790 census) McClure, Janet, shop keeper. A place of business only, no residents.
(1791) #130 S. 4th St., no listing

(1785) Montgomery, James, ship chandler, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1791) #128 S. 4th St., Montgomery, James, Captain, commander of the custom-house schooner

The location of the following three listings is not certain:

(1785) #401, Moore, Thomas
(1791) #126 S. 4th St., Wharton, Robert, wholesale grocer, also at 107 S. Water St.

(1785) #405, Greenwood, Joseph
(1791) #122 S. 4th St., McDonald, Malcom, grocer, also at 162 S. Water St. and 163 S. Front St.

(1785) #408, Collins, Jeremiah
(1791) #118 S. 4th St., Evans, Josiah
(1791) #118 S. 4th St., Manderfield, John, joiner
(1791) #118 S. 4th St., Starke, John
The 1790 census also lists people living at "Back of #118" but doesn't give their name.

BETWEEN UNION AND SPRUCE, UNKNOWN SIDE

(1785) Hill, Henry, gentleman, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1785) Reynolds, Mrs., shopkeeper, 4th between Union and Spruce
(1785) Young, Conrad, tobacconist, 4th between Union and Spruce

CORNER OF 4TH AND SPRUCE

The numbers jump from a run of addresses on the east side of 4th between Spruce and Walnut that end with #299, to a run of addresses on the east side between Union and Spruce that begin with #328. The listings for Spruce Street are sparse around 4th Street, so it may be that this corner was unoccupied in 1785.

BETWEEN SPRUCE AND WALNUT, EAST SIDE (going south)

(1785) #291, Drummond, Thomas
(1785) Drummond, Thomas, gentleman, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #61 S. 4th St., Kerbey, Michael, grocer

(1785) #294, Roberts, Widow
(1785) Roberts, Mrs., gentlewoman, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #67 S. 4th St., Harper, Christopher, grocer

(1785) Goss, Joseph, physician, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #71 S. 4th St., no listing

(1785) #298, Wharton, Widow
(1785) Wharton, Elizabeth, gentlewoman, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #73 S. 4th St., Eck, Joseph, gentleman

(1785) #299, Emlin, George, merchant (by implication of proximity of number to #298, and the subsequent jump in numbering
to #328).
(1791) #75 S. 4th St., Emlen, George, merchant

BETWEEN SPRUCE AND WALNUT, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1785) #410, Baker, Bartholomew
(1785) Baker, Bartholomew, cabinetmaker, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #112 S. 4th St., Shippen, William, doctor of physic and professor of anatomy in the university and college

(1785) #411, Mynes, James
(1785) Mines, James, cordwainer, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1791) #110 S. 4th St., Fink, Agnes, huckster shop

(1785) #418, Shippen, Edward, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas
(1785) Shippen, Edward, Esq., judge of the court of common pleas, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
Edward Shippen (1729-1806) was a prominent Philadelphia attorney during the second half of the 18th century. He was at various times in his career a Judge of the Vice-Admiralty, a member of the Philadelphia Common Council, Prothonotary of the Supreme Court. In 1784 he was appointed to the position referred to here, President Judge of the Common Pleas Court of Philadelphia County. He built his house on this block in 1745-46, and lived there until his death. This was insured (policies #302 and #303, 20 December 1791) by the Mutual Assurance Company, whose survey lists it as being 40' by 43' and three stories tall. There was also a two-story kitchen, 25' by 18', and a one-story office, 21' by 17'. This building was demolished before 1911.
(1791) #100 S. 4th St., Shippen, Edward, Esq., one of the judges of the supreme court
The 1790 census lists Shippen as owning two slaves at this location.

As of December 20, 1791, Shippen also owned another three-story dwelling on this side of this block, 24'9" by 40', which was also insured by the Mutual Assurance Company as of that date (Policy No. 301, from which the foregoing information was derived). This may have been the one at #112 S. 4th St. (#410 by the 1785 numbering) where Dr. William Shippen was living in 1791.

BETWEEN SPRUCE AND WALNUT, UNKNOWN SIDE

(1785) Clymer, George, gentleman, 4th between Spruce and Walnut
(1785) Stuberg, Frederick, hair dresser, 4th between Spruce and Walnut

CORNER OF 4TH AND WALNUT

(1791) #57 S. 4th St., Reed, James
On the northeastern corner? The problem is, the next number further north in the 1785 system, #289, Conrad, Dennis, lines up with a listing Francis White puts as being between Walnut and Chestnut. (The listing of #55 as being Dennis Conrad's former place is speculative.)

(1785) #290, Hannah, John
(1785) Hannaw, John, corner of Walnut and 4th
(1791) #59 S. 4th St., Barbezet, Jacob, barber
If the numbering is consistent, this would be on the southeastern corner.

(1791) #88 S. 4th St., Burd, Edward, Esq., Prothonotary of the Supreme Court
(1791) If the number for Hanse is correct, just below, Burd might have been on the southwestern corner (or just south of it, but speculatively placed on the corner).

(1785) #426 4th Street, #255 Walnut Street, Hanse, Conrad, coach maker
(1785) Hanse, Conrad, coachmaker, corner of Walnut and 4th
(1790 census) Hans, Conrod, coach maker
(1791) #82 S. 4th St., Hans, Conrad, coach maker
This would have been on the northwestern corner.

(1785) Wright, Patrick, confectioner, corner of Walnut and 4th

BETWEEN WALNUT AND CHESTNUT, EAST SIDE (going south)

These four alignments are speculative, based on their being in the right place and right number of addresses remaining, if the eastern corner properties at Walnut and Chestnut are correct.

(1785) #273, Lancaster, Sarah
(1790 census) [#37 S. 4th St.] Lancaster, Sarah, school mistress

(1785) #280, Shannon, Robert
(1791) #39 S. 4th St., no listing
See just below for who was living here in 1790-91.

(1785) #281, Halberstadt, John
(1791) #41 S. 4th St., no listing
See just below for who was living here in 1790-91.

(1790 census) #39 S. 4th St. to #45 S. 4th St., "Blacks," consisting of 12 "other [i.e. non-white] free persons," in this case all lumped in together regardless of who lived in what building. They were probably actually at #39 to #43; see logic as to that in the next listing.

(1785) #284, Fullerton, Widow
(1785) Fullerton, Margaret, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut
(1791) #45 S. 4th St., Thornton, George
This is rather peculiar. The 1790 census notes that the black people were living in #39-#45 S. 4th St., with George Thornton right next to them, yet the 1791 directory, which follows the census very closely (except for not including the blacks) lists George Thornton at #45. Most likely the black people were living at #39 to #43, since that's three properties and an average of four people per address was already pretty luxurious for 18th century Philadelphia in general, much less free blacks of the city.

(1785) #287, Turner, David
(1791) #47 S. 4th St., Baker, George, cordwainer

(1785) #288, Loughon, John
(1791) #51 S. 4th St., Murray, Captain

(1785) #289, Conrad, Dennis
(1785) Conrad, Dennis, bricklayer, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut
(1791) #53 S. 4th St., Coe, Richard, cordwainer

BETWEEN WALNUT AND CHESTNUT, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1785) #428, Draper, Jonathan
One would think #428 would be the equivalent of #82, but that one lines up-- Conrad Hanse, at the corner.

(1785) #429, Philips, John
(1785) Philips, John, turner, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut
(1791) #80 S. 4th St., Phillips, John, ivory turner

(1785) #430, Beek, Thomas
(1785) Beek, Thomas, painter, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut
(1791) #78 S. 4th St., Letchworth, John, chair maker, also at 109 Walnut St.

(1785) #440, vacant or residents would not give name

(1785) #441, Collins, William
(1785) Collins, William, house carpenter, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut

(1785) #447, vacant or residents would not give name
(1791) #60 S. 4th St., Bentley, John, printer

(1790 census) #58 S. 4th St., "Blacks," consisting of 3 "other [i.e. non-white] free persons."
This number is speculative; all we really known is that they were between #46 and #60 S. 4th.

BETWEEN WALNUT AND CHESTNUT, UNKNOWN SIDE

(1785) Couch, Charles, labourer, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut
(1785) White, Esther, 4th between Walnut and Chestnut

CORNER OF 4TH AND CHESTNUT

(1785) #80 Chestnut Street, Todd, John
(1785) Tod, John, schoolmaster, corner of Chestnut and 4th
On one of the southern corners, almost certainly the southeastern based on the tavern having been established to have been on the southwestern.
(1791) #35 S. 4th St., Paul, Jeremiah, schoolmaster

(1785) #81 Chestnut Street, McKensie, Widow
This is a guess; McKensie could have been between 4th and 5th, if Todd was at the southwestern corner, though the presence of the Sign of the Seven Stars on that corner tends to refute that theory. Still, it seems more likely that in such a central intersection (all four corners are shown to have been built-on already in the 1762 map) both corners would have been occupied, and these two occupying the southern corners dovetails better with that logic. If Todd were on the southwestern corner there would have been a jump of four numbers to the east, meaning no one occupied the southeastern corner in 1785.

(1785) #322 Chestnut Street, Howell, Elizabeth
(1785) Howell, Samuel, gentleman, corner of Chestnut and 4th
(1785) Howell, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Chestnut and 4th
On one of the northern corners.

(1785) #448 4th Street, McKinley, John
(1785) McKinley, John, sign Seven Stars, corner of Chestnut and 4th
On one of the western corners by the numbers, and on the southwestern corner based on the fact that Raizer was the first listing in the 1790 census for the west side of 4th Street in the Southern District, which began at Chestnut.
(1790 census) Raizer, John, tavern
(1791) #46 S. 4th St., Raser, John, innkeeper
(1791) #46 S. 4th St., Stewart, Charles, weaver
Raizer or Raser had one free black servant in the 1790 census.

(1785) #260, Marshall, William, reverend
(1785) Marshal, William, Reverend, minister, 4th between Chestnut and Market
(1791) #13 S. 4th St., Audibert, P.B., merchant
(1791) #13 S. 4th St., Bernard, Sarah, widow

(1785) #261, Thomson, James
(1785) Thompson, James, sign Indian Queen, 4th between Chestnut and Market
(1791) #15 S. 4th St., Thompson, James, innkeeper
The Indian Queen was one of the better taverns of the city. It was in existence by 1758 when the regimental surgeon (Lieutenant Rogers) of Forbes' Regiment lodged there during that winter. It covered an area of 21 feet wide and 40 feet deep, and was a three-story brick building, according to a 1767 insurance survey. It had five large rooms on the first floor for parties, four of which could be joined to form two even larger rooms. It had 16 lodging rooms on the second and third floors, with servants quarters in the garret, and two kitchens. (Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson, p.59)
Constitutional delegate Fisher Ames lodged at the Indian Queen tavern in Market Street upon his arrival in Philadelphia in early December of 1790, before moving on to Mrs. Sage's boardinghouse on N. Front St., and remarked on the stage office being the place adjoining the tavern, where they dropped their baggage.

CORNER OF 4TH AND VINE

(1785) #198, Heissheiser, Lewis
(1785) Heesshafen, Lewis, merchant, corner of Vine and 4th
Because of the jump in numbering from #91 to #125, and from #162 to this address, #198, I believe #198 was on one of the eastern corners of 4th and Vine. The listing on Vine Street makes it clear that it was on one of the southern corners.
