CORNER OF 5TH AND UNION
CORNER OF 5TH AND SPRUCE
#229 5th Street, Carr, William
#231 5th Street, Pedon, Widow
#91 Spruce Street, Peatton, William
This corner is complicated by the fortunate survival to the present of the building on the
southeastern corner, modern number 440 Spruce Street. Spelled out in original glazed brick in
the brickwork on the side facing 5th Street are the initials of the original owners of the
building in the form of a triangle, S over W P, and the date 1770. This triangular monogram was fairly
common in the 17th and 18th centuries, and usually (though not always) referred to a married
couple, with the family initial at the top, the initial of the husband's first name at the
lower left and that of the wife at the lower right. Thus, this house could have been built
for "William and Patricia Scott" or something of the sort. The
numbering, if these two listings are correctly aligned (and the designation "widow" for one
listing does make one wonder, though mistakes certainly were made in these directories) indicates
that the house was no longer occupied by its original owner.
According to the Philadelphia
Historical Commission database,
this building was surveyed for insurance purposes four times in the 18th century, and the
backbuildings were built either about 1795 or about 1815. An 1859
photograph of this building does exist. It was restored in 1977.

(1791) #64 N. 5th, Frederick Newman, card maker
(1785) #39, Christian Keen
(1791) #66 N. 5th, Christian Kein, blacksmith
Why is there no #40 in the 1785 listings? When John MacPherson assigned numbers, he allowed for where houses would likely one day be built, and also assigned numbers to such outbuildings as stables. Needless to say, neither would qualify for a listing.

(1785) #45, Charles McConnolly
(1791) #78 N. 5th, Jacob Miller, carter
(1785) #46, Edmond Sheaver
(1791) #80 N. 5th, theoretically, but like James Dexter no one is listed at this number in the
1791 directory. The problem is that no one appears in the 1790 census who can be confidently
placed here. Before and after this point the listings line up well, with a few from
1785 also appearing in their places in 1790 and 1791. This could be explained by construction
or demolition in the 6-year interval, though this is less likely here at what was then the edge
of town. Perhaps blacksmith Christian Kein moved next door to where he was living, as
Betsy Ross is claimed to have done on Arch Street, which would throw off the neat fit of the
eight listings before (i.e. to the south) of him. Or perhaps the census-takers were not
persistent enough in getting a name for this address, and eventually gave up.
(1785) #47, Ebenezer Robinson
(1791) #82 N. 5th, Ebenezar Robinson, brush maker
(1785) #48, William Smith

CORNER OF 5TH AND RACE
(1785) #61, vacant or residents would not give name
(1791) #108 N. 5th, Henry Meyer, innkeeper
Southwestern corner of 5th and Race, based on the fact that Meyer was the last listing
for this block for the Middle District, which ended to the north at Race Street.
(1785) #62 5th Street, Ironbrine, John
(1785) #344 Race Street, Izonprice, John
This is just the sort of thing hard-to-read handwriting would produce. These two listings
are not certain to refer to the same man, but they are close and both are in the right place,
approximately, to have been at the northwestern corner.
(1791) #110 N. 5th St., Isenbry, John, innkeeper. The 1791 directory listing pretty
much nails this uncertainty down, especially since #108 N. 5th (q.v.) is known to have been the
southwestern corner of 5th and Race. Isenbry, by whatever spelling, was on the northwestern
corner.
(1785) Long, John, tallow chandler, corner of Race and 5th
The Dutch Meeting Burial Ground occupied the land on the southeastern corner.
BETWEEN RACE AND VINE, EAST SIDE (going south)
The location on this block (for some at the end, also which side of the street they were on) of the following listings is speculative:

BETWEEN RACE AND VINE, WEST SIDE (going north)
It was along this side of this block (or possibly the next one north) that the speculators' buildings called the "Fourteen Chimneys" were located, but where, exactly, is not yet certain. When the 1791 directory was published it gave their location as #130 to #146 N. 5th Street, but as that system of numbering is no longer in use, the precise location of these homes will have to await a conversion method from that numbering system to the present one.

(1791) #154 N. 5th St., Wentling, Melchior, farmer
The following six listings reflect an odd situation in which the numbers don't line up right; I suspect this may have to do with the Fourteen Chimneys (q.v.) throwing off the numbers:
(1791) #156 N. 5th St., Rex, Adam, labourer
(1791) #156 N. 5th St., Rightman, Richard, taylor

NOTES:
For some reason (probably distance) the country house of Joseph Wharton, Walnut Grove, does not appear in any listings here. This house, built by him in the second quarter of the 18th century and demolished in 1862, stood in what is now the 1100 block of S. 5th Street, on a property consisting of 18 acres and extending eastward to the Delaware River. A stylish and large Georgian mansion, it was taken over by the British army during their occupation of Philadelphia in 1778, it is not surprising that it was the site of the famous Meschianza, a party (the name means an event with mixed entertainments) thrown by the redcoat officers to which many young ladies of Philadelphia's elite were invited (and attended). This information comes from the 2001 Annual Report of the Library Company of Philadelphia, noting their acquisition of a 19th-century watercolor of the house by an unknown artist. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania itself owns watercolors of the house by Philadelphia landscape artists David Kennedy and William Breton.
