6th Street

During the 18th century, the farther west one went, the more sparsely settled Philadelphia was and the fewer were the matchups between MacPherson's and White's directories. The location of more of the listings on this (and on north-south streets paralleling it to the west) are speculative as a result.

CORNER OF 6TH AND SPRUCE

Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church was built on the northwestern corner of this intersection in 1789; it still stands.

(1785) Montgomery, Cuff, labourer, corner of Walnut and 6th
(1785) Page, Stephen, sheriff's officer, corner of Walnut and 6th

BETWEEN WALNUT AND CHESTNUT, EAST SIDE

The number run from #170 to #208 is entirely unmatched, leaving us to wonder which listings were on the block between Walnut and Chestnut and which on the next block further north. There is a considerable jump in numbers dividing the number run neatly in half, and so this has been used as the tentative dividing point.

(1785) #208, vacant or residents would not give name
(1785) #209, Keissenoe, Deborah
(1785) #210, Ceron, Lucy
(1785) #211, Vernon, Joseph

(1785) #263, Hamble, John
(1791) #2 S. 6th St., Poth, Adam, shopkeeper

#263 is the final number in MacPherson's run, and according to his numbering system the west side of the block was the last to be numbered on north-south streets, so all of the foregoing must have been on this side of this block.

BETWEEN CHESTNUT AND MARKET, UNKNOWN SIDE

(1785) Clark, David and Francis, coachmakers, 6th between Market and Chestnut
David Clark made a carriage for merchant Robert Waln (Front between Arch and Race), according to Beatrice Garvan's Federal Philadelphia: The Athens of the Western World, pp.84-85.

By the numbering, on the northwestern corner.

(1785) #159 6th Street, #244 Market Street, Donaldson, Joseph sen.
(1785) Donaldson, Joseph, merchant, corner of Market and 6th
On the northeastern corner.

(1785) #161 6th Street, #103 Market Street, Dickinson, John, President.

(1785) #104 Market Street, Jones, William
(1785) Jones, Thomas, sign Blue Ball, corner of Market and 6th
Though Jones is not so rare a name as to justify placing these two listings together by themselves, William Jones' number places him at the southwestern corner, making it likely that the two addresses referred to the same place. Oddly, MacPherson does not list him at the end of the run for 6th Street, which he should have done at that corner.

(1785) Greenwood, Alexander, cordwainer, corner of Market and 6th
(1785) Pine, Robert, painter, corner of Market and 6th

BETWEEN ARCH AND RACE, WEST SIDE

The following four listings are numerically close to #40, and so are placed on this block (especially since #41 and #44 are on the block between Race and Vine, placing #40 on the northern end of this block and giving plenty of room for these lower numbers to have been on this block). #34, Sebastian Rink, is also listed as having been on this block, and would have been placed here if not for the matchup of #35, Redden or Redding Howell, on the block between Market and Arch. Because there is no evidence tending to make one resolution of this anomaly (i.e. which of those two listings was correct and which an error) more likely than the other, the listings have been set as they have with this caveat and the hope that more evidence will resolve the question.

NOTES:

According to Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson, a tavern on 6th Street in the 18th century was called the Four Alls, with a sign with four figures: a king on the steps of his palace and the motto "I govern all," a general in full dress, "I fight for all," a minister, "I pray for all," and a labourer, "I pay for all." (pp.146-147)
