Callowhill Street

Callowhill Street is technically in Northern Liberties, then the suburb immediately to the north of the city of Philadelphia. Francis White, who normally did not include listings in Northern Liberties or Southwark, did include Callowhill in his listings.

BETWEEN WATER AND FRONT, NORTH SIDE

The following ten addresses are on the north side of Callowhill in this vicinity, but there are no firm match-ups to tell us where the boundaries are. William Shroudy, #487, is a possible exception if White mistook which corner he was on, as he lists a William Shroudy, captain, at the corner of Race and Front. If he was actually two blocks up Front Street at the corner of Callowhill Street, this helps establish who was on which side of Front Street.

(1785) #486, Rush, William
(1785) Rush, William, ship carver, Callowhill near Water
William Rush (1756-1833) was one of America's first sculptors. He carved figureheads for ships, which is why he's listed here as a ship carver, but also did other work; for example, the bust he carved of Benjamin Franklin in about 1787 is in the Yale University Art Gallery. This bust is shown in Beatrice Garvan's Federal Philadelphia: The Athens of the Western World, p.12. Also shown in this work (p.54) is the terra cotta bust that he made in 1824 of the Marquis de Lafayette. This bust is at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

BETWEEN FRONT AND 2ND, NORTH SIDE

The following four listings may have been at the corner of Callowhill and 2nd, or between 2nd and 3rd Streets:

The numbering is a little off for the following two listings, since they jump from there to #77 in Biddle, but don't jump at all in MacPherson. There was probably a church or something in here which one compiler counted and the other did not.

(1785) #475, Heron, Widow
(1785) Herroe, Christiana, pewtherer, Callowhill between Front and 2nd
The Horen/Herroe/Hera family of pewterers has been something of a mystery. According to Ledlie Laughlin in his Pewter in America, Vol. II, p.49, the father was Johan Christian Horan, whose will, made September 20, 1784, was proved February 10, 1786. Laughlin took it as given that this meant that he died in 1786. This was not necessarily so; in the 18th century as now, it often took several months after death for a will to be proved, and the listing for the "Widow Heron" would seem to indicate that Johan died some time in the third quarter of 1785. On page 120 of the same work he stated that the 1785 listing for "Christiana Herroe" was in error for the father of the family or for his firstborn son, whose name was Christian, and that there was no evidence that the man's wife-- whose name was actually Charlotte-- ever made pewter. While it is no doubt true that, as Laughlin said, "spelling was free and easy in the eighteenth century," the two other Christianas listed by White-- Bolithoe on Chestnut Street, Stonmeitz in Cherry Alley or Street-- both match location-appropriate and surname-appropriate listings in MacPherson's directory for women. Moreover, all the Christians (so to speak) listed by White were actually men, to judge by their listed professions. This suggests that Laughlin was wrong: that Christiana Herroe was not a misspelling of Christian, that she and the Widow Heron were one and the same, and that she can be listed among the early female artisans of Philadelphia.

CORNER OF CALLOWHILL AND 2ND

(1785) #26 Callowhill Street, Stultz, Conrad
The only evidence that Stultz was at the corner-- it would have been the southeastern one-- is the numbering for #27, the southwestern corner. Remember that MacPherson's practice was to assign numbers to places where buildings probably would be built in the future, and the absence of any such number between #26 and #27 strongly suggests that the southeastern corner was occupied by #26.
(1791) #56 Callowhill St., Klingle, George, cooper

(1785) #27 Callowhill Street, #122 2nd Street, Kunckle, Christian
(1785) Kunckle, Christian, grocer and innkeeper, corner of Callowhill and 2nd By the numbering, on the southwestern corner.

(1785) #454 2nd Street, Youst, Charles
(1785) Yoest, Charles, leather breeches maker, 2nd and Callowhill
By the number, on the eastern side of the street.
This situation is also unclear. It seems clearly the same man, and yet several lower-numbered (i.e., further north) listings appear which match up with those White lists as being between Callowhill and Vine (i.e., further south).

BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD, SOUTH SIDE

(1791) #64 Callowhill St., Silver, John, cordwainer
Placed here as a guess, based on Conrad or Christian Kunckell of #60 being at the corner of Callowhill and 2nd.

(1785) #30, vacant or residents would not give name
(1791) #104 Callowhill St., Knecht, Philip, blacksmith, also at 222 N. 3rd St.
A very speculative alignment, based on #106 being at the southeastern corner of Callowhill and 3rd.

(1785) #441, Pestoras, Samuel
(1785) Pistorous, Samuel, house carpenter, Callowhill between 2nd and 3rd

(1791) #81 Callowhill St., Fisher, Leonard, carter

(1785) #458, Hanbright, Abraham
(1791) #79 Callowhill St., Hyneman, Frederick, inn- & shopkeeper, also at 77 Callowhill St.

(1785) #459, Bowen, Elisha
(1785) Bowman, Elijah, taylor, Callowhill between 3rd and 4th (probably an error, though it's possible that there were two men with very similar names within a block of each other).
(1791) #77 Callowhill St., Hyneman, Frederick, inn- & shopkeeper, also at 79 Callowhill St.

BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD, UNKNOWN SIDE

CORNER OF CALLOWHILL AND 3RD

(1785) #48, Kemckle, John
(1785) Marckle, John, butcher, corner of Callowhill and 3rd
There is also a John Kunckle listed between Front and 2nd; the situation is not clear. By the number, at the southeastern corner.
(1791) #106 Callowhill St., no listing

(1785) #49 Callowhill Street, #321 3rd Street, Wayne & Maxfield
(1785) Wayne and Maxfield, lumber merchants, corner of Callowhill and 3rd
By the numbering, on the southeastern corner along with John Kemckle. The next lowest number for 3rd Street, which on the eastern side north of Market would mean the next property north, is #300, which suggests that the northeastern corner of the intersection was vacant.
(1791) #108 Callowhill St., no listing

(1785) #51, Clymer, John
(1785) Clymer, John, bricklayer, corner of Callowhill and 3rd
By the numbering, probably on the southwestern corner.
(1791) #110 Callowhill St., Snyder, George, butcher

(1785) #440, Maxfield, Stephen
Though Maxfield is listed by White at the corner of Callowhill and 2nd, four or maybe five higher-numbered (i.e. further east) listings match up with those White places between 2nd and 3rd, and therefore the most likely conclusion is that White made one mistake rather than four or five: Maxfield was actually at the corner of Callowhill and 3rd, especially since Biddle's number also puts him in the right place for that. He may have been the Maxfield in the company of lumber merchants at this intersection. A process of elimination makes it likely, though not certain, that he was on the northwestern corner.
(1791) #97 Callowhill St., Maxfield, Stephen, lumber merchant

BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH, SOUTH SIDE

(1785) #55, vacant or residents would not give name
(1791) #112 Callowhill St., Krener, Jacob, cordwainer

(1791) #138 Callowhill St., Marshall, Joseph, bricklayer

(1791) #828 Callowhill St., Mangold, Frederic, cordwainer
This house number was probably a typo, since something as far west as this would have to be would simply have been listed (if at all) as "Callowhill between X and Y Sts."

BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH, NORTH SIDE

The location on this block of the following two listings is conjecture:

(1785) #428, vacant or residents would not give name
(1785) #436, vacant or residents would not give name

The following listings are on the north side of the street west of 3rd Street, but, there being no matchups, it is not yet certain which block they were on, except for #99 which was immediately next to the northwestern corner property at Callowhill and 3rd. The ones after that are not so high in number that they would be better placed on a block west of 4th St.
