Coates' Street, now Fairmount Avenue

Coates' Street was and is a street in the Northern Liberties, though today, and since 1873, it has been called Fairmount Avenue. It was not covered by Francis White, and so the only listings would be those of John MacPherson in 1785 and Clement Biddle in 1791.

There is a remarkable lack of overlap in house numbers between MacPherson's listings for Coates' Street and those for Coates' Alley. Some investigation (made possible only by has revealed that MacPherson referred to the regular Coates' Alley, which ran from Front to 2nd between Race and Vine, as South Coates' Alley. From these facts the strong case can be made that MacPherson's listings for the Northern Liberties street were sometimes designated as being on Coates' Street and sometimes (more rarely) on Coates' Alley. This, if true, would be the "North" Coates' Alley to which the "South" in South Coates' Alley referred to. Why this was done may never be explained; the most likely possibilities are that either two name-takers worked that street, one calling it an alley and one calling it a street, or that the first block of the street was then so narrow that alley was a more accurate description. The latter explanation does not explain why some addresses on that block were not listed as on Coates' Alley, but Coates' Street, and ignores the fact that the highest numbers of this thoroughfare (however one describes it) would also have been listed as being on Coates' Alley, and they were not. In any case, MacPherson's listings for what he referred to as Coates' Alley are included below, differentiated in the area of overlap by the inclusion of "Coates' Alley" or "Coates' Street" after the number, and the reader can decide for him- or herself whether they belong there.
