Coombs' Alley

Coombs' Alley, now called Cuthbert Street, is one of those few 18th century alleys to the north of Walnut Street with a row of original homes still standing. The placement of the apostrophe is, like much 18th century spelling, variable. There is not a large enough jump in numbers to know for certain which houses were on the north and which on the south side, except for the highest and lowest numbers.

This alley seems to have been one of those in which Clement Biddle followed the same numbering system as MacPherson-- that is, up one side and down the other-- though as Biddle started from a different end of the street than MacPherson, the numbers are still different.
