Cresson's Alley

This is one of several examples in the directories of the same street being called different things. White called this street Cresson's Alley; MacPherson called it either Christian's Alley or Christen's Alley. White's nomenclature is used because it appears as such in the list of alleys in the 1791 directory.

This alley seems to have been one of those in which Clement Biddle followed the same numbering system as MacPherson-- that is, up one side and down the other-- though as Biddle started from a different end of the street than MacPherson, the numbers are still different.

There is only one relatively solid match here-- the tailor Benjamin Smith-- with exactly eight matching listings on either side of him in the 1791 listings. The alignments are thus rather speculative (to put it mildly). These speculative alignments were chosen based on the numbering jumps; hopefully better information will come along.
