The waterfront lane called Crooked Billet Alley was named for the Crooked Billet Tavern which was once there, which had a crooked chunk of firewood for the sign. It ran a very short distance on the E. side of Water St. between High and Chestnut St. Only White makes reference to it by this name (and as Crooked Billet wharf, at that); MacPherson only refers to the same entries as part of "River-side," his term for the waterfront.
