Elbow Lane ran (and still runs) south from Market between 2nd and 3rd St., and turned westward to end at 3rd St. between Market and Chestnut St. The 1793 directory remarked, "That part of Elbow Lane which runs S. from High St. is commonly called White-Horse alley." Today the north-south part runs all the way through the block, and is called Bank Street, and, thus stripped of its "elbow," only the east-west part is called Elbow Lane today.
It is not yet clear at which end MacPherson or his employees would have begun; the differentiation in White's directory as to which street a given listing is "near" does not appear to line up with MacPherson's listings. Therefore, it does not seem possible to tell from this which listings were at which end of Elbow Lane. The 1791 directory listings have quite a few matchups, but they don't match up in a very clean way. Biddle also seems to have used the same numbering system as MacPherson-- up one side and down the other-- which he did for some small alleys, as opposed to his usual, more sensible practice of alternating sides when numbering.
