Penn Street

Penn Street was a fairly small street which ran from Almond Street in Southwark northward to Pine Street in the city, just to the east of Front Street. This means that the space occupied by Penn Street and its buildings is now occupied by Interstate 95.

CORNER OF PENN AND PINE

At this intersection extremely close to the waterfront, taverns were profuse.

SOUTHEASTERN CORNER

(1785) #4 Pine Street, Barrett, Tobias
(1785) Barrett, Tobias, sign Bird in Hand, corner of Pine and Penn
(1785) #1 Penn Street, #5 Pine Street, Ingraham, Dunkin
(1785) #2 Penn Street, Russel, Joseph
(1785) Rushell, Joseph, flour merchant, corner of Pine and Penn
Because Penn did not go through Pine Street to the north, #1 Penn Street must also have been at the corner, and the double-listing of Duncan Ingraham on both Penn and Pine confirms it. This was the southeastern corner; evidently there were multiple occupants of the property.
(1791) #1 Penn St., Ceronio, Stephen, merchant

SOUTHWESTERN CORNER

(1785) #96 Penn Street, #6 Pine Street, Rudolph, Tobias
(1785) Rudolph, Tobias, sign General Wayne, corner of Pine and Penn
(1791) #2 Penn St., McDowell, Susannah, tavernkeeper

(1785) Ward, Mark, sign the Fox and Leopard, corner of Pine and Penn
Given that it is unlikely that there were two taverns occupying the same corner property, this listing is a mystery. MacPherson lists only one Ward, one Susannah Ward on Fourth Street-- nowhere near this intersection.
