Vine Street

Vine Street was the northern boundary of the original city, 1682 to 1854. The 1830 corner-numbering key, therefore, gives only the southern corners (the northern being in the Northern Liberties).

CORNER OF VINE AND WATER

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#151 N. Water, southeastern corner.
#202 N. Water, southwestern corner.

BETWEEN WATER AND FRONT, SOUTH SIDE

(1785) #2, Cooper, Harrison & Co.
(1791) #2 Vine St., no listing

BETWEEN WATER AND FRONT, NORTH SIDE

BETWEEN WATER AND FRONT, UNKNOWN SIDE

CORNER OF VINE AND FRONT

(1785) #9, Read, James, Register of the Court of Admiralty
(1790 census) Riffert, Edward, 1 FW male over 16, 1 FW male under 16, 3 FW females
(1791) #14 Vine St., Riffert, Edward, tavernkeeper
#10 and #11 in 1785 were probably on the southwestern corner, based on the matchup and the 1791 directory information about the occupants there, which would make this property probably on the southeastern corner, which would be appropriate for a tavern, anyway. Hopefully more information will nail this down.

(1785) #10, Bonnell, Charles
(1785) Bonnell, Charles, cooper, corner of Vine and Front
(1790 census) Bonnell, Charles, 3 FW males over 16, 1 FW male under 16, 2 FW females
(1791) #16 Vine St., Bonnell, Charles, cooper, also at 180 N. Front St.
The Front Street address probably refers to this location, not a separate property, so if so the even Front Street number would make this on the southwestern corner.

(1785) #11, Bonnell, Widow
(1785) Bonnell, Sarah, shopkeeper, corner of Vine and Front
This was probably on the same corner with Charles Bonnell.

(1785) Augustus, Lewis, shopkeeper, corner of Vine and Front
(1785) Mustee, Mr., merchant, corner of Vine and Front

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#207 N. Front, southeastern corner.
#108 N. Front, southwestern corner.

(1790 census) Jones, John, 1 FW male over 16, 3 FW males under 16, 1 FW female
(1791) #32 Vine St., Jones, John, mariner
There are, unfortunately, three men named John Jones listed as heads of household in the 1790 census of the Northern District of Philadelphia, and because Northern District listings did not note professions, there is as yet no way to know which of the three listings it is. Until a way emerges, all three are given here.

(1790 census) Cost, Martin, 1 FW male over 16, 2 FW males under 16, 1 FW female

(1791) #56 Vine St., Fordham, Benjamin, shipwright

(1785) #33, Siddons, Josiah, house carpenter
(1785) Seddons, Josiah, taylor, Vine between Front and 2nd
Why he's listed in one as a carpenter and in the other as a taylor, is a mystery. Perhaps there was more than one Josiah in the household.

CORNER OF VINE AND 2ND

(1785) #38 Vine Street, #94 2nd Street, Baker, Chrisopher, conveyancer
(1785) Baker, Christopher, conveyancer, corner of Vine and 2nd
By the numbering, he was on the southwestern corner. For some reason, the next numbers on 2nd Street, which would normally represent the northwestern corner, are not so listed; Seymour Hart at #95 and Rev. William Rogers at #96 are both listed by White as living on 2nd between Vine and Callowhill, not at the corner of Vine and 2nd. Similarly, neither Abraham Logan or Charles Shockoa of #36 and #37 Vine-- the numbers one of which should represent the southeastern corner-- are so listed, either.

(1785) Deshong, Christian, shopkeeper, corner of Vine and 2nd

(1785) Isenhoot, Andrew, #473 2nd Street
(1785) Isenhoot, Andrew, coppersmith, corner of Vine and 2nd
On one of the eastern corners.

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

(1791) #80 Vine St., Winemore, Thomas, potter

(1790 census) Smith, Henry, 2 FW males over 16, 2 FW males under 16, 4 FW females

Like John Jones above, there was more than one man of this name in the Northern District, which means there is as yet no way to tell them apart.

(1785) Bryan, George, Esq., judge of the supreme court, Vine between 2nd and 3rd
Was Samuel Bryan (below) a relative and also living here? It is not inconceivable that he got his job as clerk of the general assembly through nepotism.

(1790 census) Albrecht, Charles, 1 FW male over 16, 1 FW female
(1791) #128 Vine St., Albrecht, Charles, joiner
A Hepplewhite piano appears in an advertisement in The Magazine Antiques for March of 1959, and is signed "Charles Albrecht/Maker/Philadelphia." Ketchum's American Cabinetmakers says that Albrecht was active in Philadelphia from 1789 to 1824, and may have produced both case and works.

(1791) #132 Vine St., Clawes, Henry, merchant
Oddly, Clawes does not seem to be listed in the 1790 census, though he does appear in the 1791 directory, an unusual circumstance.
