Walnut Street

CORNER OF WALNUT AND WATER

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#13, northeastern corner.
#15, northwestern corner.
#14, southeastern corner.
#12, southwestern corner.
It seems likely that they have the southern corners' numbers reversed, so that #12 would be the southeastern corner and #14 the southwestern.

(1785) #276, Hamilton, Widow
(1785) Hamilton, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Walnut and 3rd
The numbering, based on the fact that the Bishop White house at #274 is modern-day #309, means that Widow Hamilton probably lived on the northwestern corner. See Evan Griffiths' listing at #275.

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#81 S. 3rd, northeastern corner.

The "Bishop White" house still stands, operated by the National Park Service. It is at what is today #309 Walnut. This is it at the left. Click here to go to a website about it, which claims that it was built in 1787. This may be so as to the house there now, but it does seem clear that White was living in whatever house was there before in 1785.
(1791) #89 Walnut St., White, William, Right Reverend, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal church in Pennsylvania [and chaplain of the United States Congress]
(1791) #85 Walnut St., Harrison, Mary, gentlewoman

#275, Griffiths, Evan
Possibly at the corner of Walnut & 3rd, but probably not (see #276); based on the numbering and the amount of space available, it was probably at modern-day #305, now part of the NPS park on the northwestern corner of Walnut & 3rd. The spacing and numbering is odd-- only one building occupied the rather large space between the corner property and the Bishop White house at #274, and that the spacing was such that numbers were not assigned to the spaces between buildings. Dr. Benjamin Rush lived at about #303 in 1791-93, according to a marker on the site, which does not make clear whether this was a new construction or the same building that Griffiths occupied in 1785.
(1791) #83 Walnut St., Rush, Doctor Benjamin, professor of the theory and practice of physic in the college [and] Physician of the Port

He was on one of the southern corners.

(1785) Hannaw, John, corner of Walnut and 4th
(1785) Wright, Patrick, confectioner, corner of Walnut and 4th

(1785) #250, vacant or residents would not give name
This number probably refers to the house on the northeastern corner of Walnut and 4th, built about 1775, which still stands.
In typical fashion it's named after its most crowd-pleasing resident: Dolley Payne Todd lived there from 1791 to 1793 with her husband John Todd, and after he died of the yellow fever in 1793, she married future president James Madison. Obviously it did exist in 1785, and it seems quite likely that either John Hannaw or Patrick Wright lived there then. (Because the occupants of only three of the four corners are known, it is not certain.)
This house is run by the National Park Service; their website about it is
here. Another website about it is here.
(1791) #117 Walnut St., Davis, Enoch, carpenter

(1791) #119 Walnut St., McGlochlen, Patrick, labourer
This alignment (of #119 being on the corner) as well as that of #117, are guesses; the corner properties may well have had 4th Street numbers instead.

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#117 Walnut, northeastern corner.
#119 Walnut, northwestern corner.
#82 Walnut, southeastern corner.

CORNER OF WALNUT AND 5TH

(1785) #66, Reed, James, silk dyer
(1785) Read, Samuel, silk dyer, corner of Walnut and 5th
Their surname, profession, and about the same location make them possible relatives living in the same property.

(1785) Perringer, Christopher, baker, corner of Walnut and 5th

The 1830 directory, in which the same numbering system theoretically was in place, contained a key to the numbering of corner properties and gives the following numbers for this corner:

#153 Walnut or S. 5th, northeastern corner. The "3" could be an "8" but would be wrong in that case; a northeastern corner cannot have an even number.
No # ("State House Yard"), northwestern corner.
#122 Walnut, southeastern corner.
#124 Walnut, southwestern corner.

BETWEEN 5TH AND 6TH, SOUTH SIDE (going west)

BETWEEN 5TH AND 6TH, NORTH SIDE

The location of these four listings on this block is a guess, based on approximate location and the possibility that #235 is a correct association with White's listing for Margaret Freeman (and that's assuming he gave the correct block for her):

(1785) #234, vacant or residents would not give name
(1791) #155 Walnut St., no listing

CORNER OF WALNUT AND 8TH

(1785) #103, Brown, Nathaniel
(1785) Brown, Nathaniel, boardinghouse, corner of Walnut and 8th

White's directory listings for Walnut Street end at the block between 8th and 9th Streets (see #102). There is some sort of anomaly here; Brown's boardinghouse at #103 should have a lower number than William John Ashton's house at #102, because they are at the corner and the block beyond, respectively. The jump after #103 (to #234) must represent the crossing of the street and the allowance of numbers for future westward construction, so these two entries must both have been on the south side of the street.

NOTES:

According to Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson, John Johnston successfully argued himself into a license to keep a tavern by pointing out that there were none on his end of Walnut Street. (p.43) The time in the 18th century when this occurred was not specified in the book; neither was the tavern's name or more exact location.
