Water Street

"Behind these wharfs, and parallel to the river, runs Water-Street. This is the first street which you usually enter after landing, and it does not serve to give a stranger a very favourable opinion either of the neatness or commodiousness of the public ways of Philadelphia. It is no more than thirty feet wide, and immediately behind the houses, which stand on the side farthest from the water, a high bank, supposed to be the old bank of the river, rises, which renders the air very confined. Added to this, such stenches at times prevail in it, owing in part to the quantity of filth and dirt that is suffered to remain on the pavement, and in part to what is deposited in waste houses, of which there are several in the street, that it is really dreadful to pass through it. It was here that the malignant yellow fever broke out in the year 1793, that made such terrible ravages, and in the summer season, in general, the street is found extremely unhealthy. That the inhabitants, after suffering so much from the sickness that originated in it, should remain thus inattentive to the cleanliness of Water Street is truly surprising; more especially so, when it is considered, that the streets in the other part of the town are as much distinguished for the neatness that prevails throughout them, as this one is for its dirty condition."

-- from Isaac Weld, Travels Through the States of North America...During the Years 1795, 1796 and 1797, pp.3-4.

Water Street (known before the Revolution as King Street) was just behind the wharves. Almost all of Water Street as it existed in the 18th century has been obliterated by Interstate 95. A little bit remains in Southwark.

When viewing the north-south streets, it should be kept in mind that MacPherson's numbering pattern was even odder than the east-west streets. He began at the northwestern corner of the north-south street and Market Street, and walked north, his path eventually describing an elongated backwards letter C, ending at the southwestern corner of the same intersection.

(1785) #329, Wharton & Turner
(1785) #330, Brown, William

The location of the following listings is uncertain. Based on the matchup of Lawrence Myers at #361, the corner of Water and Christian Streets, named in both directories as a blacksmith, it would seem that MacPherson crossed the street there, for the listings start going back north at about that point. Therefore these listings are placed on the east side. This does not explain, however, why so many people lived on the east side and so few on the west.

Neither of these listings is matched up, but #371 is, as being "two doors from Queen" which because #370 is matched as being between Christian and Queen, would make #372 at or about the corner.

CORNER OF WATER AND ALMOND

(1785) #415, Musgrove & Smith, grocers
The listings for #414 and #416 match up as being between Catharine and Almond and Almond and South, respectively, leading to a conclusion that #415 was at the corner. This is not certain, but seems likely, since MacPherson assigned numbers to where houses probably would be built, and did not do so here.

The first known theatrical performances in Philadelphia were held in William Plumsted's store on Water between Pine and Lombard, in 1749. They were driven from the city. In 1754 a different company gave twenty-four more performances in Plumsted's store, and then there were none until 1759, on South Street (q.v.). It is not presently known which of the above numbered addresses was occupied by Plumstead thirty-six years earlier.

CORNER OF WATER AND WALNUT

This corner is quite strange; the listing for #227 and #239 match up, and a startling number of the intermediate listings that match up are "Water above Walnut" or below it. Is this a large corner property with multiple tenants, or simply some kind of mixup with #227 (i.e. Hagernau having more than one location)?

(1785) #625, White, Thomas
Because quite clearly there could not have been a couple blocks' worth of space-- particularly not in this location-- it seems certain that this number is incorrect. It may have been a printer's typesetting transposition, putting the "5" at the wrong end of the numeral. This would, if so, make the true number #562.

(1791) #36 N. Water St., Benson, Alexander, cordwainer
Benson seems to have moved a few doors away by 1791; it is unclear how #15 could have been renumbered #36, or how #17 could have been renumbered #50, and so we are left with the conclusion that in the six-year interval each man moved to a different place on the block. More information, however, may disprove that hypothesis.

The location of the following four listings is uncertain (some may have been at the corner). They do illustrate pretty well the problems inherent in this kind of matching-up attempt; if Nathan Field and David Potts line up at #27/#56 and #28/#58, Samuel Shaw, Anthony Groves or Greves, and the Cook family, below, at #32 to #34, should be at #66 to #70, not at #72 to #76, as the matchups make it very clear they were.

There is only one 1791 number for both eastern corner properties (#167 and #168 in the 1785 numbering) so #55 has been placed here as speculation only; #55 could have referred to #167, or #167 and #168 could have both been on the same corner (that did occur).

(1785) Trotter, Daniel, cabinetmaker, Water above Arch
(1791) #61 N. Water St., Trotter, Daniel, joiner, also at 30 Elfrith's Alley
This building, renumbered #61 N. Water St. in 1791, was a small 1 1/2-story frame building which presented its gable end to the street, Dutch fashion. An 1848 watercolor of it by John M. Gries is reproduced in Anne Castrodale Golovin's article in Winterthur Portfolio 6, "Daniel Trotter: Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia Cabinetmaker." According to that article Daniel Trotter (1747-1800) leased this building from Leonard Shallcross from at least 1775 until 1797
A marvelous mahogany tambour desk (a desk which closes like a roll-top desk, but which closes in a simple arc rather than in an S-curve) attributed to Trotter (d.1800) and possibly his apprentice (and later, partner) Ephraim Haines (1775-1837), is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and is illustrated and discussed in Beatrice Garvan's Federal Philadelphia: The Athens of the Western World, pp.84-85. This desk, made for merchant Robert Waln (Front between Arch and Race; not listed in MacPherson), is remarkable for several reasons, but most of all for the script W executed in silver on each side and the silver candle-arms mounted to the top on each side.

(1785) #104, Palmer, Joseph, corner of Callowhill, Water and Front
(1791) #214 N. Water St., McPherson, Margaret, widow
Because John MacPherson might have continued his numbering north of Callowhill Street, the cross-over point, numerically, might have been at a number higher than #104; see the section on the corner of Water and Callowhill for the logic placing Joseph Palmer at the southwestern corner. Therefore the location of the following eleven listings is not certain:

(1785) #105, Britton, John
(1785) #106, Ridgeway, Allen
(1785) #107, Duize, Widow

(1785) #125, Snyder, Casper, cooper
(1785) Snyder, Casper, cooper, corner of Vine and Water
(1791) #153 N. Water St., Cooper, Benjamin, hatter
This alignment is somewhat speculative, but Benjamin Cooper's number is in about the right place to have been on the corner, and the next number north matches up with the first 1785 entry on the east side of Water.

NOTES:

According to Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson, the Tun Tavern was built in 1686 by Joshua Carpenter on the cartway that led to Carpenter's Wharf. The cartway then became known as Tun Alley, and was the site of Carpenter's brewery. (p.28) George Campion (d. 1731) ran the Tun Tavern in the 1720s after having run the Sign of the Plume of Feathers, and after 1731 his widow Mary Campion ran it. (p.66) The city's first Masonic lodge met here when its proprietor was a member, (p.63) and the Beefsteak Club met here, too, when its proprietor was James Mullan in 1744. (p.86)

(same source) Alice Guest arrived in Philadelphia in 1683 and began keeping a tavern in one of the caves in the riverbank. By 1692, however, she had built an actual tavern on her lot, the Crooked Billet, and by the time of her death in 1705 she'd built a wharf, warehouses, and access to the whole, including the tavern, by Crooked Billet Alley. When Benjamin Franklin first arrived in Philadelphia in 1723, the Crooked Billet was the "reputable" tavern a Quaker recommended to him. (p.31) It stood at the north end of South Water Street and was rented at some point by one Rebecca Terry. (p.68)

(same source) "In 1729 tickets for a special St. David's Day sermon in Welsh were sold at Robert Davies's Queen's Head tavern on Water Street." (p.63) A professor of Latin and French, Michael Coleman Shaughnessey, took lodgings here when he arrived in early 1748, and advertised in the Pennsylvania Gazette that anyone wishing lessons should apply to him there.
