- [S299] Southeastern Dixie Parade, May-June 1959 (Vol. XIV, No. 5; This was the house magazine of the Sherwin Williams Co., Atlanta.) It is with deep and sincere regret that we announce the passing of our good friend and fellow-worker, H. B. Whitmore, on April 12, 1059. "Whit," as he was familiarly known to his associates, had faithfully served the Sherwin-Williams Company since August 9, 1937. For a number of years he traveled an important dealer territory out of the Tampa Main Branch. In checking our progress in Florida, it would be difficult to find anyone who has contributed more than has Harold Whitmore. To know Whit meant the beginning of a freindly relationship that lasted over the years. He was just that kind of man. Area manager G. L. Howell said that Whit was a good, sound thinker, and that he found him to be invaluable as a personal advisor, as well as a tried and true friend. Whit was a 'regular' fellow to all dealers and fellow employees alike, and was considered a good diplomat and public relations man for the Company. Indeed, he will be missed by all. He and Mrs. Whitmore have one son, Harold, who is a graduate Chemical Engineer..

Whitmore|He was a five year old white male, son of the head of the household, unmarried and his occupation was "at home." He and his father were born in Michigan; his mother was born in Pennsylvania..4

His father and mother were born in New York [actually Michigan for father and Pennsylvania for mother]. He was employed as a railroad section foreman, and had not been unemployed in the last year. He rented the house that was his residence. Listed with Horace Clayton Whitmore were Bessie Livermore Babcock.7
In late 1900 or early 1901 Horace Clayton Whitmore and Daniel Henry Whitmore moved from the Saginaw Michigan area to Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. It is probable that available work on the portion of the railroad between Midland and Port Huron was scarce, and they were not willing to keep moving westward to Reed City and Pere Marquette. They were, of course, accompanied by their wives, both pregnant at the time of the move or shortly after. In 1901 they were employed as conductors on the trollys in Duluth. Later they moved to Chisholm, St. Louis County, and were employed at the Hartley Mine on the Masabi Iron range.
In December 1908 Horace Clayton Whitmore went to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota for surgery for the removal of one of his kidneys.. His sister, an unknown person , came from Owosso, Michigan, to be a private duty nurse. The operation was performed by Dr. Charles Mayo on December 2, 1908, and was very "advanced" for the times, as was all major surgery of this nature. The day before surgery he wrote to his wife, Bessie, in Chisholm, describing the clinic and his feelings: My dearst little girl, I am going to write a line before I go under fire. I am fooling you & have had a time to make Sis keep still. She is scared to. But it is of you I am thinking. When I was at the hospital the other day and saw all those white faced men and women sitting in the main office, starting out of their chairs with a groan every time someone cried or one of those wagons went by bringing someone from the operating room. He went on to tell her that if he didn't survive, and she couldn't keep the children, she should "let one of the girls --his sisters Sara and Carrie--take them. (They were both married and had no children of their own.).8
He and Bessie Livermore Babcock resided in 1911 at Basin, Wyoming.9
Sometime in 1911 Horace Clayton Whitmore and Daniel Henry Whitmore moved from Minnesota to Basin, Wyoming.
He and Bessie Livermore Babcock resided in 1920 at Casper, Wyoming.10
He resided in 1925 at St. Petersburg, Florida.
He died on 18 October 1937 at St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, at age 62; Principal cause of death was renal calculi and hydronephrosis. Contributory cause was uremia.11
He was buried Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida.

H. Whitmore, of Winifred, Mont., to Walter C. Graff (sic), of Philadelphia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Graff, of that city. The ceremony took place at hight noon today in the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Sara Reynolds, North Water street, in the presence of immediate relatives and close friends of the young people. The bridal party, which included Miss Ola Gladys Hylton, of Ann Arbor, maid of honor, and Frank Emmerling, of Philadelphia, best man, took their appointed places to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march, played by Miss Eileen Fairchild, of Rochester. Ivory satin had been chosen by the bride for her wedding gown, beakutifully fashioned with a princess bodice, long tight sleeves and a circular skirt, made very long and falling to the bloor at the back. The hem was outlined with tulle, and tulle and rose point lace marked the neck line. Her tulle veile was confined to the coiffure in cap effect, with soft bands of the material, and was caught at either side with orange blossoms. The last perfect detail was the wedding bouquet of bride's roses and swansonia tied with a wide satin bow of ivory ribbon. Miss Hylton was charming in chiffon in the lovely autumn copper shade, the bodice fashined in the new silhouette, and the full skirt, made very long, and falling to the floor at the back, made in a series of pointed flounces. She afterwards attended the University of Michigan, and has since been practicing dental hygiene in Detroit. Guests from out of the city present for the nuptials were Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Graff, parents of the groom, and Mrs. Frank C. Emmerling, of Philadelphia; Earle Whitmore, of Port Huron; Mr. and Mrs. George Walther, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wortman, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Coquigne, Mr. and Mrs. William Hermann, of Flint; Dr. and Mrs. Leon Haywood and Miss Cecelia Denks, of Detroit; Mrs. Mary Shaprstene, of San Gabriel, Calif; Miss Dorothy Ketcham and Miss Marie Kimmel, of Ann Arbor; Miss Madeline Thompson, of Lansing, and Miss Esther Cole, of Rochester.2

Emmerling, of Philadelphia; Earle Whitmore, of Port Huron; Mr. and Mrs. George Walther, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wortman, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Coquigne, Mr. and Mrs. William Hermann, of Flint; Dr. and Mrs. Leon Haywood and Miss Cecelia Denks, of Detroit; Mrs. Mary Shaprstene, of San Gabriel, Calif; Miss Dorothy Ketcham and Miss Marie Kimmel, of Ann Arbor; Miss Madeline Thompson, of Lansing, and Miss Esther Cole, of Rochester.5

Arthur Babcock (c 1888);My grandmother never mentioned an adopted brother, nor another child in the household. This was probably not an adoption in the legal sense, and Arthur was probably a part of the household for a very short time. No evidence or his adoption, other than the cenus, has been found. Nothing further is known of him.

- [S44] "A Sudden Death, " n.pub., unknown date A Sudden Death "Billie Babcock, of North Bradley is dead," were the words that shocked many Coleman people as they came down town Monday morning. It seemed impossible, as only thirty-six hours previous he was visiting with his Coleman friends apparently as healthy and happy as ever. But it was too true. Genial "Billie" had gone to join the great majority. During Sunday afternoon he was taken with a severe pain in the stomach but soon found relief and he felt as well as ever. About midnight he was again attacked by a similar pain only more severe. L. F., his brother, was summoned and loving hands did everything in their power for his relief, but he continued to suffer untold agony. After suffering in this manner for nearly two hours he stated to his brother, "you'll have to help me soon," then his head fell to one side and Billie Babcock was dead. Dr. High had been sent for but he did not arrive until death had did its work. William A. Babcock was born March 10, 1849, at Milan, Mich., hence was 48 years, 1 month and 1 day old. In June, 1872, he came to North Bradley and has been an active man in that community from that time until the day of his death. For many years he was engaged in the cercantile business with his brother, Leslie F., and for nearly three years he conducted the business alone. He has held many important positions of trust--all going to show the confidence the community reposed in him. From 1872 to 1895, a period of twenty-three years, he was North Bradley's postmaster. He was deputy sheriff for many years and held the offices of supervisor and treasurer of Geneva township many times. In 1876 he was married to Miss Alice Witter and one child, Mis Bessie, came to make glad their home. Mr. Babcock loved social life and was a great believer in fraternal orders, being a member of the Odd Fellows, K.P. and Foresters, carring an insurance in the Foresters. The funeral services were held in the North Bradley school house Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W. E. Ogden, of Lyons, preaching the sermon. A special train from Coleman carried members of the K.P., I.O.O.F., Foresters and friends of the deceased to attend the funeral, conducted by the members of Coleman K. P. lodge, of which deceased was a member. Besides his wife and daughter he leaves a brother, an aged mother to mourn his loss and they have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
In his closing remarks Rev. Ogden truly said: "Mr. Babcock was a kind husband, a loving father, a dutiful son. Ever ready to help one in trouble. He will be greatly missed in the home, community and in the fraternal circles where he was so often found. Mrs. Babcock and daughter want to express throught the columns of this paper their heartfelt thanks to their neighbors and friends for the many acts of kindness whown them during their hour of need. Also to the fraternal societies of Coleman..

 | William & Angeline Babcock |
William A. Babcock was born on 31 January 1818 at New York.1
He was the son of Moses Babcock and Abigail (--?--).1
He was born on 11 February 1818 at New York.2
He was probably enumerated with Moses Babcock on the census of 1820, at Junius, Seneca County, New York, as one of two males under ten-years.3
He was probably enumerated with Moses Babcock on the census of 1830, at Arcadia, Wayne County, New York, as one male 10-15.4
He was probably enumerated with Moses Babcock on the census of 1840, at Putnam Township, Livingston County, Michigab, as one of two maies 20 to < 30.5
He married Angeline Rachael Converse, daughter of Elias Converse Jr. and Anna Fredenburg, in 1845 at Livingston County, Michigan. The material in A. R. Babcock's obituary in the Sun appears to be reasonably accurate, and the year given for the marriage is consistent with the birth dates for thie children. These, in turn, are the same as those which appeared in the article about Leslie Babcock about twenty years earlier in Midland Portrait and Biographical. Macliver, in Days and Ways, says that the marriage occured in Cayuga County, New York. Although this information was probably supplied to Macliver by my grandmother, it is obviously in error, as census data indicates that Angeline was with her father in Michigan by 1840. Yates repeats the error about the marriage occuring in New York in Salt of the Earth. In view of the fact that her father and step mother are listed in the 1850 census of Livingston County, Michigan, and William Babcock's parents were also in Livingston County by about 1840, it is likely that they met and married in Livingston County.6,7,8,9
[PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 8 August 1850 , Platteville Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, as Wm. Babcock. He listed as 31 years old, a wagon maker, born in New York. Listed with William A. Babcock were Angeline Rachael Converse and William Alamando Babcock.10

Elias Converse Jr.1 b. 05 Feb 1801, d. 05 Nov 1874 Pop-up Pedigree
Appears on charts: Descendant Chart for Elias Converse Jr.
Elias Converse Jr. was born on 5 February 1801 at Bridport, Addison County, Vermont; son of Elias and Sarah.2
He was also known as Elias B. Converse Name given in the Converse Genealogy.3
He was the son of Elias Converse and Sarah (Sally) Barrows.
He was baptized on 10 January 1805 at the Congregational Church, Bridport, Vermont; on the account of his parents, Elias and Sarah Converse. He was baptized again, 6 September 1805, on the account of his mother, Sarah Converse.4
He was probably enumerated with Elias Converse on the census of 1810, at Bridport, Addison County, New York, as one of two males under ten.5
He married Anna Fredenburg, daughter of William Vredenburg and Anna (--?--), circa 1818 at New York?. The primary source of proof for this marriage is the death certificate of her son Lewis Converse, which gives the names of his parents as father, Elias Converse, mother, Anna Fretinberg. (The death certificate of Angeline Rachael Converse Babcock names Elias Converse as her father but reports mother unknown.) This is almost certainly a mistranscription (or a misspelling) for Fredenburg. Based on their son William's birthdate, he marriage proably took place in 1818, and in the small community of Savannah, New York was the officiant at the wedding.6
He was probably enumerated with Elias Converse on the census of 1820, at Galen Township, Seneca County, New York, as one of three males age 16 through 25.7
Elias Converse Jr. was listed as head of household on the census of 1830 , Savannah, Wayne County, New York, as Elias Convers Jr.. Included as part of his household were 1 male 10 through 15 (William, age 11), 1 male 20 through 29 (Elias himself, age 29), 1 female 5 through 9 (Angeline R., age 5) and 1 female 20 through 29 (Hannah, his wife).8
He, of Conquest, Cayuga County, New York, purchased land on 14 January 1840 in at SW quarter of Section 25, Conway Township, Livingston Couty, Michigan.9
[PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 1840 , Conquest, Cayuga County, New York, as Elias Converse. This is clearly a second census listing for Elias Converse, also enumerated in White Lake Township, Oakland County Michigan. This listing has a household consisting of two males less than five (James and Lewis, ages 2 and 4), one male five through nine (Ransom, age 9), one male 30-39 (Elias himself, age 39), one female ten through 14 (Angeline, 15) and one female 30-40 (Anna Fredenburg Converse, his wife). This is the same family unit shown on the White Lake enumeration.10
Elias Converse Jr. was listed as head of household on the census of 1840 , White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Elias Converse. He was listed with a household consisting of 2 males less than 5 (James, 2 and Lewis 4, until July), 1 male 5-9 (Ransome, 9), 1 male 30-39 (Elias himself, 39), 1 female 15-19 (Angeline Rachael, 16 in September), and 1 female 30-39 (his wife, Anna). William, about 21, is no longer a part of the household. Elias was employed in agriculture. Elias is listed on a line between his nephew by marriage, Sloan Cooley, and his nephew, Prosper Bunyea, suggesting that they either share the same house or have adjoining houses.11

Deacon Edward Converse b. 23 Mar 1588/89, d. 10 Aug 1663 Pop-up Pedigree
Appears on charts: Pedigree for Elias Converse
Although six or seven generations of the descendants of Edward Converse have been well documented for at least a century, many of the published reports of his ancestry have been far from satisfactory. One of the earliest genealogies of the Converse family, published in the late 19th century,1 reported Edward as a descendant of the noble Conyers family of Durham. Although a highly respected contemporary journal, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register found this claim dubious,2 it has been repeated in many subsequent genealogies of the Converse family.3 C. A. Converse's two volume genealogy,4 published in 1905, repeated the earlier pedigree, but also included an extensive study of the Convers family of Essex, recording numerous wills and baptism, marriage and burial records from several neighboring Essex parishes. Eben Putnam, a genealogist of substantial repute, had done research for Converse, and a report of his efforts was included at the end of Volume 2.5 Putnam even included a four or five generation pedigree for the Convers family of Navestock and South Weald. This report, and the data on which it was based, appears to have been largely ignored by Converse family researchrs for almost a century. In 1992 a brief study by the Petersons6 reached the conclusion that the Convers family of Navestock and South Weald were, indeed, the forbears of Edward Convers of Woburn. It remained for Douglas Richardson, in an article about the family of Edward's first wife, Sarah Parker, to dot the "i's" and cross the "t's", and clearly define Edward's ancestry. Although the Convers family of Navestock and South Weald may have been descended from the noble Conyers family of Durham, that connection is certainly not definite, and Edward's immediate ancestors were what Eben Putnam termed "substantial yeomen [and] ... for their time and position well supplied with wordly effects, and possesed lands in more than one parish."7 This background for Edward appears perfectly consistent with the position he held in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1630.
Deacon Edward Converse was baptized on 23 March 1588/89 at Navestock, Essex, England.8
He was the son of Allen Convers and Joanna (?).8
He married Sarah Parker, daughter of John Parker, on 29 June 1614 at Great Burstead, Essex, England.
Edward Convers was born while Elizabeth I reigned in England, and James I began his reign and the Stuart dynasty when Edward was 14-years-old. During the reign of Elizabeth, the so called "Elizabethan Settlement," a compromise between the reforming and the more catholic elements of the English Church, had had kept the more extreme of reformers, the Puritans, under tight control. With the accession of James in 1603, the Puritans hoped for further reforms, including major modifications in the role of bishops. The Hampton Court Conference of 1604 quickly demonstrated to them that James had no plans to move in their direction. James' death and the succession of his son as Charles I in 1626 made it even less likely that the reforms the Puritans were seeking would take place.
He married Sarah (?) before 14 October 1632.9
He left a will in August 1659 at Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
He married Joanna Warren on 9 September 1662 at Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
He died on 10 August 1663 at Woburn, Massachusetts, at age 74.
He was buried First Burial Ground, Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Their marriage must have occured before this date, and after the death of Edward's first wife, Sarah Parker Convers. Richardson in his article on the Parker Brothers argues that the marriage was fairly recent, based on the fact that no children were born between Edward's daughter, Sarah, and the birth of Edward's and the second Sarah's son Samuel in 1638. On the other hand, it might well have occured shortly after the death of Sarah Parker Convers, as Edward would have needed a mother for his children., Dismissal from the first Church.
