He married Phoebe Elithorpe on 15 November 1795 at the Congregational, Bridport, Vermont. The Rev. Increase Graves was the officiant at the wedding.2 He married Sally Smith Burton on 6 July 1810 at Bridport, Addison Co., Vermont.3 Alfred Converse was listed as head of household on the census of 1810 as Alford Converse. Listed with Alfred Converse were 1 male under 10 (probably his son Hiram), 1 male 26 through 44 (Alfred himself, age 38), 2 females under 10 (probably his daugher Saline, and possibly his daughter Matildah) and 1 female 16 through 44 (probably his second wife, Sally Smith Burton Converse).4 He died on 18 January 1849 at Bridport, Vermont, at age 76.

Listed with Pain Converse II were 2 males under 10 (probably Pain, age 9 and Orlin age 6), 1 male 10 through 15 (probably Heman, age 11), 1 male 26 through 44 (Pain II himself, age 33), 1 female under 10 (probably Mahitable, age 3), 1 female 16 through 25 (servant?) and 1 female 26 through 44 (probably his wife Sarah Gale Converse).3 He died in February 1864 at Canton, New York, at age 86.

     Her married name was Bunyea.1 Lucy Converse was born on 18 April 1788 at Bridport, Addison County, Vermont. She was the daughter of Elias Converse and Sarah (Sally) Barrows. She married Nehemiah Bunyea, son of John Bunyea, on 16 December 1804 at the Congregational Church, Bridport, Vermont. The Rev. Increase Graves was the officiant at the wedding.2,3 She was probably enumerated with Nehemiah Bunyea on the census of 1820, at Galen Township, Seneca County, New York, as one female 26 through 44 (she was 32).4 Lucy was enumerated with Nehemiah Bunyea on the census of 1830, at Savannah, Wayne County, New York, as one female 30 through 39.5 She may have been enumerated with Nehemiah Bunyea on the census of 1830, at Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York, as one female 40-49.6 On 18 August 1837, Lucy Converse and Nehemiah Bunyea, of the Township of White Lake, sold land described as North East quarter of the NW quarter of Section 36, White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan to Prosper Bunyea of White Lake Township [their son] for $100. This was 40 acres of the 80 acres Nehemiah had purchased from Job W. May in June, 1837. Witnesses to the signing of the deed were Warfield Ludlow and Benjamin Bunyea [also their son], and Warfield Ludlow, Justice of the Peace, attested to the validity of the signatures.7 She was probably enumerated with Nehemiah Bunyea on the census of 1840, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as one female, 50 and less than 60.8 On 27 May 1843, Lucy Converse and Nehemiah Bunyea, of the Town of Mentz, Cayuga County, New York, sold land described as West quarter of the SW quarter of Section 36, White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan to Benjamin Bunyea [thier son] for $100.. This was 40 acres of the 80 acres Nehemiah had purchased from Job W. May in June, 1837. Witnesses to the signing of the deed were N. Post and P. Conklin, and Nathaniel Post, Justice of the Peace, State of New York, attested to the validity of the signatures and his authority was confirmed by William Richardson, Clerk of the County of Cayuga. Nehemiah and Lucy had evidently returned to Cayuga County for some undetermined period of time.9 She was probably enumerated with Nehemiah Bunyea on the census of 1845, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as one female, 45 through 75.10

     Most Converse family researchers have, at one time or another, confused George Converse, son of Elias and Sarah (Barrows) Converse with George Converse, son of Horace Converse and husband of Susan Alfred. This latter George settled in Amboy Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, and his descendants were well acquainted with the descendants of Royal Converse.

One brief history of the Converse family, written by a Guy Converse (possibly Guy Chester Converse, ) reports that the George who married Susan Alfred was a son of Elias, Sr., "lived in Denmark, N. Y. and died in Wayne County." He goes on to say that "His widow [Susan Alfred] with her five children, Timothy, Henry (Dank), Alfred, Del and Rachel, moved to Amboy MI in 1849 to be near her brother Geo. Alfred and family, and camped near the famiy cemetery on the Alfred farm. Later the amily bouth the farm one half mile west, wich Alfred Converse later owne. She married Dr. Delameter and moved to California. Their son John Delameter and her son Del, lived and died there." This was the first marriage in Savannah was the officiant at the wedding.1,5 Sally was enumerated with Augustus C. Specht on the census of 1880, at Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, as Sarah Frutenberg.      Anna Fredenburg was also known as Hannah Vredenburg. Her married name was Converse. She was born on 3 April 1801; Anny his wife.2 She was the daughter of William Vredenburg and Anna (--?--). She was born on 5 April 1801.3 She married Elias Converse Jr., son of Elias Converse and Sarah (Sally) Barrows, circa 1818 at New York?. The primary source of proof for this marriage is the death certificate of her son Lewis Converse, which gives the names of his parents as father, Elias Converse, mother, Anna Fretinberg. (The death certificate of Angeline Rachael Converse Babcock names Elias Converse as her father but reports mother unknown.) This is almost certainly a mistranscription (or a misspelling) for Fredenburg. Based on their son William's birthdate, he marriage proably took place in 1818, and in the small community of Savannah, New York was the officiant at the wedding.4 She was probably enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1830, at Savannah, Wayne County, Wayne County, as one female 20 through 29.5 It is probable, based on sex and age, that Anna Fredenburg was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1840, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan. She would have been "one female, 30-39."6 She died after 1840 at probably Oakland County, Michigan.7

It is probable, based on sex and age, that Ransom Converse was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1840, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan. He would have been "one male 5-9. It is assumed that his next younger brother, Albert J. Converse, died before 1840, as only one male in this age category appears on the 1840 census, and we have no record of Albert after 1840."3 Ransom was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 2 October 1850, at White Lakes Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Ransome Converse. He was a 19 year old male, born in New York.4 He married Lovina Richmond, daughter of Alexander Richmond and Harriet Field, on 1 January 1853 at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan.      Lewis Converse was born on 7 June 1835 at New York; Calculated from death certificate, prably in error.1 He was born on 27 July 1835; Conflicting birth date data exists. The month and year of this date is consistent with the census of 1900.2 He was the son of Elias Converse Jr. and Anna Fredenburg. It is probable, based on sex and age, that Lewis Converse was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1840, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan. He would have been "one of two males 5-9 years old."3 He appeared on the census of 2 October 1850 at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan; Lewis Converse, 16, male, laborer, born NY, is shown as a laborer with the family of Ira Howell, Jr., dwelling 2133, family 2170. It is likely that he was "double counted" on this census, listed at home although actually living with the Howells.4 Lewis was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 2 October 1850, at White Lakes Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Lewis Converse. He was a 15 year old male, born in New York.5 He married Pruella Beebe, daughter of Erastus Beebe and Elizabeth Grinnell, on 2 January 1854 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. O. H. P. Green, M. G. was the officiant at the wedding. Henry Kimball and Sloan Cooley. Were witnesses. Lewis's age was given as 18, and his residence as Pontiac. Pruella's age was 17, and she was also of Pontiac.6,7 [PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 2 July 1870 , Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Lewis Converse|He was a 36 year old male carpenter, born in Michigan. His personal property was valued at $500. Listed with Lewis Converse were Pruella Beebe, Frederick E. B. Converse and Elizabeth M. Converse.8 [PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 22 June 1900 , Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Lewis Converse | He was born in July 1835, in New York. He had been married for 43 years. His parents were born in Vermont. He was a provision dealer, and had not been unemployed in the last year. He rented the house in which he lived.. James Converse James Converse Residence      A biographical sketch was written about him in in 1880 and appears in the notes.1 James Converse was born on 30 September 1838 at Conquest, Cayuga County, New York.2,3 He was the son of Elias Converse Jr. and Anna Fredenburg. It is probable, based on sex and age, that James Converse was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1840, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan. He would have been "one of two males 5-9 years old."4 James was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 2 October 1850, at White Lakes Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as James Converse.5 He married Emily Miner, daughter of Ezra Miner and Anna M. Skidmore, on 15 July 1860 at Cohoctah Township, Livingston County, Michigan. By Charles Drummond, JP was the officiant at the wedding. William Miner and Cyrus Haynes, both of Cohoctah, were witnesses. (Note: Marriage cettificate gives his age as 18, and hers as 16.).6,7 He and Emily Miner purchased land on 17 March 1864 in at Section 18, Cohoctah Township, Livingston County, Michigan.8 He and Emily Miner sold land in 1866 in at Section 18, Cohoctah Township, Livingston County, Michigan.8 He and Emily Miner purchased land for taxes on 28 February 1867 in at E part and the SW part of the NW quarter of Section 5, Handy Township, Livingston County, Michigan.8 [PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 23 June 1870 , Handy Township, Livingston County, Michigan, as Ja's Converse. He was a 30 year old male, a farmer, born in New York. His real estate was valued at $1400 and personal property at $600 Listed with James Converse were Emily Miner and Ettie Cunningham.9,10 In 1875 James Converse owned 45 acres in the SE corner of the NE quarter of at Section 5, Handy Township, Livingston County, Michigan. This was adjacent to the property owned by his brother, George D. Converse.11 In 1910 James and Emily (Miner) Converse celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Many members of the family joined them to honor this event, and a photograph was taken. This was probably the model for later family reunions.   1. [S332] Franklin Ellis, History of Livingston, p. 250-251:      Elias Converse was born in Vermont. In his boyhood he went to the State of New York, where he followed farming for a livelihood. In 1840 he moved to the town of Commerce, in Oakland Co., Mich. Here he remained but one year, when he came to the town of Conway, Livingston Co., Mich., and bought a new farm, which he improved. This farm he sold, and then returned to Oakland County. Seven years later he again sold, and returned to Conway, purchasing a farm, on which he lived until his death.
         James Converse, the subject of this sketch, was born Sept. 30, 1838, in the town of Conquest, Cayuga Co., N.Y. He lived with his father until he was of age, when he started out in life for himself. He worked by the month on a farm one year, then rented a farm, by which means he obtained his start in life. In 1864, Mr. Converse purchased a wild tract in the town of Cohoctah, which he soon traded for an improved farm in the town of Conway. This he sold in 1867, buying the farm on section 5, in Handy, which he now owns. It was then nearly new, with only log buildings. He has improved the land and built fine buildings, and although his farm is small, consisting of but forty-five acres, he has done better than many on farms of three times the size. That he has now so fine a place is due solely to the energy and industry of himself and wife. Mr. Converse has never taken an active part in politics, but votes with the Democratic party. He was married July 15, 1860, to Miss Emily Miner, who was born Sept. 28, 1838, in Hartland, Mich. She is a daughter of Ezra and Anna M. (Skidmore) Miner.

    A Good Man Laid to Rest
    James Converse died at the home of his son, Fred, in this village [Fowlerville] on Tuesday, Feb. 20, after an illness of a few weeks. He was born Sept. 30, 1838, at Syracuse, New York, and at the age of two years came with his parents to Michigan, settling at Commerce, Oakland county, and when he was ten years of age, they moved to the township of Conway, this county. He was united in marriage to Miss Emily Miner, July 15, 1860, and in 1866 purchased the farm where he continued his residence for 50 years, with the exception of the few weeks he spent in the home of his son in this village. For 56 years they traveled the road of married life together sharing the joys and sorrows of pioneer days and the coming days will be very lonely for her. Mr. Converse was of a genial, kindly nature and was greatly respected as a neighbor and friend. The funeral services were held at the house on Thursday afternoon, the Rev. G. L. Adams officiating and the remains placed inone of the crypts in the mausoleum..

Lucas Hartstuff was the officiant at the wedding. Henry Hartstuff and Benjamin Kirkland were witnesses.1,7 She and Elias Converse Jr. sold land in 1845 in the at SW quarter of Section 25, Livingston Couty, Michigan.8 Harriet was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 2 October 1850, at White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan, as Harriet Converse. She was a 30 year old female, born in New York..9 Harriet was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 1860, at Conway Township, Livingston County, Michigan, as Harriet Converse. She was a 4? year old female, born in New York..10 Harriet was enumerated with Elias Converse Jr. on the census of 13 June 1870, at Conway Township, Livingston County, Michigan, as Harriet Converse. She was a 50 year old, white female. Her occupation was keeping house, and she was born in New York.11 The atlas of the county for 1875 shows Mrs E. Converse as the owner of at Section 25, Conway Township, Livingston County, Michigan.12 Harriet was enumerated with Jerome Richmond on the census of 11 June 1880, at Henrietta Township, Jackson County, Michigan, as Harriet Converse, age 65.13 She died on 17 June 1890 at residence of Herbert L. Converse, Fowlerville, Livingston County, Michigan, at age 75.3 She was buried on 19 June 1890 Coughran Cemetery, Section 25, Conway Township, Livingston County, Michigan, her grave marker reads: Harriet, Wife of Elias Converse, died Jaune 17, 1890, aged 75 Yrs 8 Mo's & 26 Days..2 Harriet Fields Converse marker Her obituary appears in notes; Mrs. Harriet Converse died at the residence of her son, Mr. Herbert Converse, in this village on Thursday morning, of consumption, aged 76 years. She was born in New York in 1811, and came to Michigan in 1833, and settled in Sele, Washtenaw county, where she remained until 1842, when she removed to Jackson county and in 1843 she came to livingston county and settled in the township of Conway where she remained until about four years since, when she removed to this village and took up her residence with her son. She was a good christian and has reared a fine family of sons and daughters who have grown into able and honorable men and women and the world is surely better for her having lived in it, and more just shuch women as she has been is what the world needs today. Not only was her influence felt by her family but it could not be confined there but extended to the neighborhood in which she lived. The Funeral services were held in the Coughran school house in Conway, on Thursday and were largely attended.14

Babcock and Angeline Rachael Converse.5,6 Leslie Foster was enumerated with William A. Babcock on the census of August 1870, at Jerome Township, Midland County, Michigan, as Leslie F. Babcock. He was a 16 year old male, born in Wisconsin. His occupation was described as "at home".7 He was mentioned in the probate records of the estate of William A.     Leslie F. Babcock, farmer on section 9, and acting Postmaster at North Bradley, was born May 19, 1855, in Grant Co., Wis., and is the son of William and Angeline R. (Converse) Babcock. His father was born Feb. 11, 1818, in the State of New York, of English ancestry. The mother was born Sept. 10, 1824, in Cayuga Co., N. Y., and comes of the genuine New England Puritan stock, as indicated by her family name of Converse. The family of the senior Babcock moved to Wisconsin in 1849, and settled in Grant County. After a residence there of 11 years they started, in the spring of 1860, for Pike's Peak, traveling thither in a prairie schooner, in a caravan train. They remained among the mountains six weeks and retraced their steps to Manchester, Delaware Co., Iowa, where the father opened a shop for the prosecution of his trade of wagon-making. He conducted his interests in that line two years at that place, selling his wagons to farmers. In 1863 he came to Livingston Co., Mich., and spent eight years at LeRoy and Fowlervile. While in that county he managed a hotel at Leroy and at a point two miles west of Fowlerville, on the road from Detroit to Lansing, before the construction of the railroads through that region. In 1870 he sold out and moved to Sanford, where he operated three years as a hotel-keeper. In 1873 he removed his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he remained a few months. He bought two two-horse teans, one saddle horse and seven head of cattle, and went to the eastern part of Southern Iowa, and settled for a winter opposite Nebraska City, shere he sold out all his stock except one team, with which he moved back to Michigan. He built a hotel at North Bradley, this county, and the family continued to conduct it until 1878. The father died Dec. 19, 1874. His eldest son was the first Postmaster at North Bradley, and still retains the position, with his mother as deputy.

    The family included four sons and an adopted daughter: Charles J., born Aug 2, 1847, died Dec. 21 of the same year; William A., born March 10, 1849; Franklin M., born Feb. 19, 1851, died May 12, 1862; and Alice (adopted).

    Mr. Babcock is a Republican in political connection and has been active in local official positions. He has served five terms as Supervisor, two terms as Town Clerk, two terms as Treasurer and is now Deputy Sheriff.

    He was married Aug 9, 1878, to Alice, daughter of Joseph and Rachel (Emlan) Geary. Her father was born in Kent, England, and died Feb. 2, 1879; her mother is of French descent and resides at Central Lake, Antrim Co., Mich..

Roxy (Rocksy) Witter was born circa 1811 at New York.2 She was the daughter of Amos Witter and Eunice [Witter].1 She immigrated circa 1849 to Oakland County(?), Michigan; 1894 census shows she had lived in Michigan for 45 years.3 She married Lambson Livermore circa 1850.1 Roxy (Rocksy) was enumerated with Lambson Livermore on the census of 3 August 1870, at Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, as Rockey Livermore. She was a 59 year old female, born in New York. Her occupation was keeping house.4 Roxy (Rocksy) was enumerated with William A. Greenleaf on the census of 1894, at Ward 3, Midland, Midland County, Michigan, as R. Livermore. She was an 83 year old widowed, female boarder. She had never had children. She was born in New York, her father in New York and her mother in Connecticut. She had lived in Michigan for 45 years and the US for 83 years..5 She died on 2 September 1896 at Midland City, Midland County, Michigan; Midland Republican, 5 Sep 1896, page 5:
"Mrs. Roxy Livermore, aged 85 years, foster mother of Mrs. Wm. Greenleaf died at Mrs. William Greenleaf's home Wednesday. The funeral will be held at the house at 10 o'clock today, and the body will be taken to Milford. Mrs. Babcock, of North Bradley is with the family."

Julia Ette Rapp+   (24 Apr 1839 - 27 Aug 1901);Chances are the adoption must have taken place circa 1849-1851 or thereabouts. If 1894 census data on arrival in Michigan is accurate, JERWG arrived circa 1844 at age 6. RWL didn't arrive until circa 1849 when JER was 10 years old. Therefore there is a good chance I will find Rapps in the 1850 census in Oakland County with Julia Ette as a part of the family. Of course if the census data is inaccurate the adoption may have taken place in New York.

     Lambson Livermore Had at least one brother, Alfred Livermore, who had a son Jesse Livermore. He was born on 23 December 1806.1 Lambsonand an unknown person purchased land on 20 June 1836 at Section 9 160 acres, 3N Range 6, White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan; "From Ontario County, New York; Among the first land owners in Oakland County."2 He married Roxy (Rocksy) Witter, daughter of Amos Witter and Eunice [Witter], circa 1850.3 [PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 3 August 1870 , Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, as Lambson Livermore. He was a 63 year old male farmer, born in New York. His real estate was valued at $6,000, his personal estate at $2,000 Listed with Lambson Livermore were Roxy (Rocksy) Witter and Floyd Burnham.4 He died on 10 March 1885 at Oakland County, Michigan, at age 78.1 He was buried after 10 March 1885 Milford, Oakland County, Michigan.5

Two males less than ten (one probably his son William age 2), one male 26 and under 45 (Moses himself, age about 32), one female less than ten, one female 16 and under 26 (probably his wife, Abigail) Listed with Moses Babcock were Abigail (--?--) and William A. Babcock.4 [PG1] was listed as head of household on the census of 1830 , Arcadia, Wayne County, New York, as Moses Babcock. One male under five, two males 5-10 (one of them probably his son Loren, age 6), one male 10-15 (probably his son William, age 12), 1 male 15-20, one male 40-50 (Moses himself, age about 42), one female under 5, one female 5-10, one female 10-15 and one female 30-40 (probably his wife, Abigail) Listed with Moses Babcock were Abigail (--?--), William A. It was indicated that he had been married within the year, and as this was checked for most persons on the page, it is suspected that the enumerator misunderstood the question.
