Movies I'm a big movie fan. I go to lots of movies in Boston's theaters There are many movie reviews online from Roger Ebert. to Mr. Cranky to those that are haikus, but see Rotten Tomatoes or movies.com for an excellent brief summary of reviews of current films (with links to the whole reviews). There's a lot of film info online. For news and rumors check out Aint It Cool News, Dark Horizons and Cinescape Online. Yes, I watch the Academy Awards every year, and try to see every film nominated for a major award. People often ask me what my favorite film is but it's hard for me to narrow it to one film. I'm more likely to name something in the National Film Registry than a big money-maker *. The AFI has good lists of good films I particularly like Hitchcock (who's 100th birthday was Aug 13, 1999) and if pressed I'd have to say Rear Window is my favorite film. All-Movie Guide

TiVo I watch a fair amount of TV. Now that I have a Sony TiVo TV is a whole new experience. It let's you watch what you want when you want it, without thinking about when or on what channel it's broadcast. There's a long TiVo FAQ and active TiVo Community Forum. There's also a group of people who hack their Tivo's but the most common thing is to merely upgrade the hard disks using Hinsdale's How To Tivo Hacking Links Tivohelp.com and Tivo let's me watch only the shows I like. Palm I have a Palm Tungsten T3. It's very nice with a gorgeous 480 x 320 screen. I'm a big fan of the Palm OS I have a lot of 3rd party applications installed on my T3 and many of them are capable of taking advantage of the long screen. But it's a new device so there are some patches from palm that are needed. I have the following accessories from Boxwave: ClearTouch, miniSync, and Wall Charger and am very happy with all of them, although here's another interesting accessory. For reviews of hardware and software visit The Gadgeteer. Get etexts at MemoWare. Find games at Palm Gaming World and game reviews at PDArcade. Previously I've had a Sony Clié T615C, and several older Palm models: Palm Vx, Palm IIIx, and a Palm Pilot Professional.

Investing You can get financial news and stock quotes (delayed 15 minutes) for free. Other news sources include the Wall Street Journal (it may well be the best online newspaper, but you have to pay for it) and online financial magazines like: Money, Forbes, Fortune, and The Economist. There are subscription-based sites that provide financial commentary and analysis on the Net like TheStreet and Briefing.com. And if you can't understand the language Investor Words will help. The exchanges ( NYSE and NASDAQ) are online but don't have a lot of content. There are online forums like the Motley Fool. and some online journals like the Efficient Frontier to help you figure out what you want to do. Mutual funds like Fidelity Investments and Vanguard are online and have lots of info, and you can do stock research with Morning Star or the SEC's EDGAR database. Check out your broker with the NASD Regulation Public Disclosure Program. You can even trade online with E*Trade or other brokerages. BigCharts

Geneology I've gotten into geneology. I now know the names of 12 of my 16 great-great grand parents. Somewhere I read that geneology is the third most popular hobby in the US. Not surprisingly the net has been used for geneology research since long before the web. While you used to have to go to cemetraries and small records rooms around the world, you now have access to huge amounts of genealogical info from your computer (and now from your computer you can ask a volunteer to go to a small records room for you). One of the benefits of the connected net is that people are now sharing their information and generating enormous databases. The US GenWeb and World GenWeb projects are doing this for free with volunteers. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does this with FamilySearch. And geneology.com is one of many commercial ventures. The US National Archives (NARA) provides a lot of materials for Genealogical Research as does the Library of Congress. There are a number of software programs to help you collect and organize your family information. I use the industry leading Family Tree Maker on Windows and GedStar on my Palm Vx. Time magazine had a cover story in April 1999 on Geneology including a good review of the software available. Cyndi's List

Federal Web Locator The web makes it much easier to be involved in your government at both the federal and state levels. Both the House and Senate are online, as well as the White House. Communicate with your Congress. The Supreme Court finally has it's own web site but there have been other sites that provide a database of decisions and Oyez has audio of some old decisions. Have you read the US Constitution recently? While I don't like to, I have to seriously thank Newt Gingrich for Thomas (but for nothing else). Visit the intelligence community, NASA or the Smithsonian You might find your State's Court online. The government uses computers in a big way. Thomas

Privacy I've gotten interested in the Right to Privacy both on the net and off. Let's say I know what computers can do with a lot of publically available information, and I'm not that confortable with so much being accessible. There are many books on the subject that I want to read, so far I recommend The Right to Privacy by Ellen Alderman and Caroline Kennedy. What to do about it? The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse has some fact sheets to help.

Reading I love wandering through a good bookstore like Borders or Barnes & Noble. The Internet Book List is trying to be the IMDB of books but there's always Amazon and many on-line books (support Project Gutenberg).

Hobbies I have some well-known weaknesses for Absolut vodka, and Godiva chocolate (or any chocolate). I have a large collection of Absolut Vodka magazine Ads I've gathered since 1987. It may be uncommon, but I'm not alone in this hobby, by any means. there are many who post absolut ads on the net.
NY Giants I'm not a big sports fan, but I do follow the New York Giants of the NFL. I live around Boston and FOX doesn't broadcast many of the games here. I read about the in Giants in the Bergen County Record and at BBWC. Nando Sports
