About Us
There are three connecting Greenway Trails planned for this area. They are The Bayshore Treewalk Trail (from Sarasota Bay through Bayshore Gardens to Holiday Heights), The Ware's Creek Trail (from Holiday Heights to Cortez Shopping Center and DeSoto Square Mall and then to the Manatee River) and The Palma Sola Trail (from Holiday Heights to G.T. Bray Park and then to Palma Sola Bay).

Bike, Walk, Wheelchair and, in the future, Segway without the dangers of highway traffic"

Urban greenways can provide alternative transportation to work and play, improve community appearances and land values, offer youth and adult recreation opportunities and even create safety zones when effectively implemented. There are a number of models for successful urban greenways that have connected low-income urban residents with necessary services and recreational amenities.

Manatee County Greenway Trails

On July 23, 2002 the Manatee County Greenways Master Plan was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners. The Plan identifies eleven named trails in the Bradenton Area that would all interconnect into a greenway system.

Three of the trails intersect at the southern end of Holiday Heights; The Bayshore Treewalk Trail, The Ware's Creek Trail and The Palma Sola Trail.

What happened to our trails?... *Read the 2005 County Update* (Modified in September 2007) Notice that the BRAND NEW Coqina Beach Trail wasn't even on the original list of proposed trails!

Greenways and trails can serve as alternative transportation routes for commuting to work or school, bicycling or walking to local businesses or restaurants, visiting parks and recreation sites, or sightseeing. Trails often can be designed in conjunction with utility corridors and pipelines. These alternative forms of transportation, if made convenient by greenways, can help reduce air pollution and road congestion.

Because greenways lead somewhere and can connect with other greenways that go to still more places, they attract people from all walks of life. A statewide system of greenways will provide many opportunities for public outdoor recreation and wellness activities. Trails can provide places for visitors and resident bicyclists, hikers, walkers, joggers, rollerbladers, horseback riders and physically challenged people to exercise and experience the many natural and cultural wonders of Our state. Greenways along rivers, lakes and the coast can also provide access to canoeists, kayakers, and sailors. What are the benefits of Greenways and Trails?

MJ: Does "unfunded" mean never?
ST: Unfunded does not mean never. It means that the project is not in the 5 year window of the Capital Improvements Program window. Also, with the current financial crunch in the budget all trail projects will slow down. The Board of County Commissioners has reduced the Trail CIP budget to $800,000 over the next 5 year cycle and it may go to $0.00 if more cuts happen.

MJ: I would like an update on the status of the trails planned for the Holiday Heights/Cedar Hammock Canal area.
ST: In the Greenways Master Plan the closest trail is the Proposed Bayshore-Treewalk Trail but has not made it to the Capital Improvements Program list.

MJ: Has the proposed Palma Sola Trail along the Cedar Hammock Canal to G.T. Bray Park been cancelled or just postponed?
ST: The status for the Proposed Palma Sola Trail is in the Greenways Master Plan but has not made it to the Capital Improvements Program list.

MJ: What is the schedule for the Wares Creek Trail and the Bayshore Treewalk Trail?
ST: The status for the Wares Creek Trail and the Proposed Bayshore-Treewalk Trail are in the Greenways Master Plan but have not made it to the Capital Improvements Program list.
