Ondine's Curse
trt., 11:00 minutes copyright, virocode 2000
From an era where barriers are constructed of skin, latex, and delusion comes a tale of life without borders.
Ondine's Curse is a narrative of a woman who seeks out pathogens as mentors of disguised meanings.
Ondine challenges the paranoia of contamination by embracing the process of infestation as a form of dialogue.
"For years the sick day became Ondine's primary motivation for seeking out infections until she was
inadvertently exposed to the greater function of illness by her parents. Perhaps it was at this time that
Ondine began to awaken to the perspective that illness was a path to greater health; that disease has shaped
our lives as individuals and guided our development as a species. "
Biography
The work presented here has been created through an ongoing collaborative project
between a medical researcher, and an artist, under the aegis of virocode. Virocode has been
producing artwork since 1987 concentrated in the mediums of photography and videography.
The work has been exhibited nationally at; MOMA in New York City, Hallwalls, Burchfield Penney,
The Albright Knox and CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, New York, Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley,
Diversworks Art Space in Houston and Southern Exposure Gallery in San Francisco and,
Internationally in various European video festivals. The collaboration began by examining a biological
metastructure of infection, mutation and reproduction as an essential force and adapting
these vitalities for an art-organism. The new work updates these biological paradigms.
