East Boston Urban Wild

•McCardle Bridge

•The first naval Battle of The American Revolutionary War May 1775 Sinking the Ship Diana. Chelsea River Revel in June Chelsea Creek 1.5 mi. long. This area offered a ferry to Boston.

 

East Boston Branch Library

East Boston Branch Library, Trinity House, Meridian House are some historic landmarks.

 

Donald McKay purchased a tidewater tract of land that fronted on 406 Border Street where he immediately set up his yard.

The Donald McKay Shipyard is now General Ship Corp. The shipyard was the length of Border St. from White St. to the store. The fastest clipper ship in the world was built here.

 

Harborside Community School

Harborside Community School Land was used as docks and shipyards. Noddles Island was annexed by Boston in 1636. The Shawmut Indians named Boston. The meaning is believed to be “living waters”.

 

East Boston High School

•Cross cut by Brooks St., which brings you to the Eagle Hill Neighborhood. East Boston High School, McKay House, two, and three Decker, homes…

 

The East Boston Machine Co. 84 Condor was part of the area’s metal working industry.

Chemical, oil plants, woodworking firms’ foundries New England Pottery Company was located at 146 Condor St.

 

People lived near their workplace.

 

Known as Birdland. Sagamore Indians were the first settlers 12,000 years ago. Abundant fish and shellfish drew them.

 

Across American Legion Park, The Urban Wild is here. The marsh is growing and people are welcome to enjoy the area again.

 

A Mini-Grant from the Chelsea Creek Action Group made this activity possible. This is a Harborside Community School Education Program 2005 Publication.
