Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Wrinkles will develop as we age due to the breakdown of supporting structures such as collagen and elastin fibers. Sun exposure, smoking, and even facial expressions such as smiling, laughing, and frowning, contribute to the formation of wrinkles. While there are effective treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, and CO2 and erbium laser resurfacing, all of these methods take layers of skin off and require bandages with significant time to recover. Non-ablative laser skin rejuvenation is a revolutionary new technology that is gentle on your skin and tough on your wrinkles.

Non-ablative laser skin rejuvenation, otherwise known as the "Lunchtime Face Lift," has become popular because treatments can be done in a short amount of time with virtually no downtime. This not only treats your wrinkles, but also other facial conditions such as acne scarring, rosacea, facial redness, large pores, and oily skin. In addition, by improving skin tone, it will prevent wrinkles and decrease pore size. This procedure offers many advantages because it is non-invasive with minimal adverse effects. Alternatives such as ablative skin resurfacing, otherwise known as dermabrasion, CO2 or erbium lasers, and chemical peels not only require a difficult recovery period with intense redness lasting up to 4 to 6 weeks, but anesthesia is needed for the significant pain and bleeding. In comparison, non-ablative laser skin rejuvenation is virtually painless and will cause only mild redness that is usually resolved within 1 to 2 hours. You will be able to resume normal activities immediately.

Laser skin rejuvenation works by aiding the growth and remodeling of collagen. The laser targets your own layers of collagen beneath the skin’s surface. In a few weeks, the stimulated collagen will fill the void of wrinkles and scars. This procedure does not require local anesthesia and is very well tolerated. Treatments are usually given in 3-4 week intervals for a series of 3-5 treatments. Maintenance treatments for prevention may also be recommended.

Laser skin rejuvenation is often combined with BOTOX® injections to maximize results. Dynamic lines, wrinkles caused by muscle movement, are treated well with the combination. The non-ablative laser technique works to smooth the wrinkles already created while the BOTOX® works best at preventing the worsening of these fine lines. We also offer Restylane® and Juvederm® . Dr. Reiter can discuss the best course of action with you.

Spider Vein Treatment

Laser spider vein treatment has become very popular because it is non-invasive and offers many advantages over sclerotherapy. While sclerotherapy may take multiple treatments and needle injections are needed in each vein, laser treatment may only require 1 treatment and needles are not used. Our lasers treat spider veins of all colors (red, blue, and purple) and our physician will individualize treatment based on your characteristics (i.e. skin color, vein color, etc.) We use the Nd:Yag laser to accomplish your goals. Veins on almost any area on the body can be treated, although leg and facial veins are the most common.

Lasers work by targeting the color in the blood vessel and selectively heating them without damaging surrounding tissues. The laser will destroy these veins in just a few minutes. The vein may look slightly bruised after treatment, but the bruising will dissipate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the laser treatment feel like?
A pulse of laser light feels like a small pinch or slight sting similar to the snap of a rubber band against skin. No local anesthesia is required and the procedure is well tolerated. For people with very sensitive skin, a prescription topical anesthetic can be provided.

When will the veins go away?

Maximum effect can take up to 6 months, but you will notice most changes within 3 months.

How many treatments are required?
Generally only 1 treatment is required, although over the years you may develop new veins that need to be treated.

Are there some people who should not get treatment?

There are certain medical conditions and medications that preclude patients from laser treatment. Certain medications can cause increased photosensitivity and may cause burns if not properly recognized. Our physician will review your medical history prior to treatment. It is imperative to have a licensed physician perform all laser procedures for safety reasons.

AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Post Treatment Instructions:

1. Immediately after the treatments, you should apply an ice pack, as there may be mild swelling. It

is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You should use a cold

compress if needed. Avoid any trauma to the skin for up to 2-5 days, such as bathing with very

hot water, strenuous exercise, or massage.

2. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin to achieve your best results. If any crusting, apply

antibiotic cream. Some physicians recommend aloe vera gel or some other after sunburn

treatment such as Desitin. Darker pigmented people may have more discomfort than lighter skin

people and may require the aloe vera gel or an antibiotic ointment longer. Follow instructions as

specified by Pier Laser Med Spa.

3. Makeup may be used after the treatment has quit swelling unless there is epidermal bleeding. It

is recommended to use new makeup to reduce the possibility of infection. Keep the area moist.

Any moisturizer without alpha-hydroxy acids will work.

4. You may shower after the laser treatments in tepid water. The treated area may be washed

gently with a mild soap. Skin should be patted dry and NOT rubbed.

5. You will experience redness and bruising from five to fourteen days at the treatment. Avoid

direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 1-2 months and throughout the course of the treatment

so as to reduce the chance of dark or light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 25 or higher at all times

throughout the treatment when going outside.

6. Avoid tweezing, waxing, bleaching or chemical peels during the course of the treatment. Do not

use any irritants such as Retin-A, Benzoyl Peroxide or astringents.

7. If work on the leg has been done, wear compression stockings for 48 hours and then during the

day while on feet for up to two weeks.
