Becoming
a Notary Public of New York State
Advertising business online or otherwise, does
not always urge calls of well, "business." One does get eccentric calls from time to time. Lately, I have been
receiving telephone inquiries from people who frantically wish to become notaries so that they can do mortgage closings.
First and mostly, I am not a notary training school
nor I am an employee of any county clerks' offices or NY State Department. Those government entities are officially
equipped to answer your questions, http://nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/, http://www.dos.state.ny.us/.
Information on test taking for a commission and Notary
License may be obtained at this following link, http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/ntryinfo.html.
All of the hardworking Notaries Public I know,
including myself, are effective at their craft, but we are Notaries Public first before we are Notary Signing Agents.
Knowing the Law is imperative, for not executing
a notarial act correctly on a recordable document in a mortgage package, can cost a notary more than what her/his E&O
insurance covers. It also can also cost unnecessary fees owed, one's reputation, lessening of repeat business, the adding
of laws that will make it even harder for Notary Signing Agents to get work, and depending how serious or how fraudulent an
act, the loss of one's commission or pending law suits.
So to those of you who wish to become Notaries, you
will be public officials who officiate as impartial witnesses and must abide by the NYS Notary Public License Law, http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/lawbooks/notary.html. There are many changes in the law consistently, and one must keep
up with those changes. Acquaint yourself with the law then when you are confident, sit in on a few mortgage closings, then
do business for yourselves.
There are prep classes you may take at your local community colleges
or you may purchase prep materials or online classes from notary sites, here are a few: http://www.becomeanotary.us/bannyork.htm, http://www.notarypubliccentral.com, http://notarystudy.com/courses.php?cat_id=5. However, it's really about acquainting yourself with the Law. For frequently asked questions,

I am not a lawyer, but instead a Notary
