YOU CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO BUY A BOTTLE JACK or even better A FLOOR JACK and STANDS. You can pick a floor jack for less than 50$, and it has become one of the most often used tools I have. > > On the same note: Where is a good location to place the jack stands? DO NOT USE THE RIDGES, THEY ARE ONLY FOR THE EMERGENCY JACK. > Probably the best place to put jack stands would be under a suspension > cross member, like the lower control arm. That way, the axle is VW advices against jacking the car up on the A-Arms as well. Here is how I do it: Fronts: Look underneath the car roughly where you see the stamped mark on frame. You will see a round protrusion partially sticking out partially recessed. It also has a big hole in the middle. It's a couple inches away from the outer side of the car. I use my floor jack with a block of wood and a stiff foam pad on that boss. The foam and wood (oak!) are there to prevent damage to the body and to distribute the load. I usually leave the jack there but add a jack with a block of wood near the ridge. Rears: Look at the rear axle beam's mounting points. There is a flat piece of solid body structure where i use my jack with wood and foam. I place the jacks underneath the squarish protrusions (again with a hole in the middle) near the rear bumper of the car. If you take of a wheel, slide it face up underneath the car for added protection. > I was able to put the car up on 4 jackstands with wheels removed, I have never done this, I alway work with at least two wheels on the ground, with the jacks and stands in place!
