The previous owner had it fixed for me, a body shop put in a whole new railing system for around $600. Then, the sunroof started to jam open when opened all the way. This happened on New Years eve '94 when a friend opened it all the way inadvertantly. We got sick of this and decided to tear the motor apart. First remove the sunroof motor cover by undoing the screws beneath the interior lights. The motor is then held by two additional screws and a metal template. Undo the screws and jiggle the pinion pin out of the cable drive. The motor itself comes apart with a couple of plastic clips. Be careful not to break them, as they are brittle. The motor consists of a gear drive assembly, a pin bank and the electric motor that drives the pinion. We tore the whole thing apart, pulled the electric motor drive shaft apart from the magnets, cleaned the rusty drive shaft magnets, and lubed up the whole thing. We put it back it and it ran much more smoothly. But it still jammed! So I just didn't open the sunroof all the way for a year. Then I got sick of this state of affairs again and tore into the motor once more. I figured out this time that it was probably the pin bank/gear drive assembly that was the culprit. One cheap little plastic pin was loose and jammed up the whole timing by stopping the gears from rotating. I was lucky enough to find a sunroof motor at a salvage yard for $125. Dealers wanted like $475! Installed the new used motor and the sunroof works like a charm. Opens all the way. Beware when opening the sunroof mechanisms that the timing for tilt and swivel consists of two separate logic systems. 1. the internal motor logic 2. the sunroof cable track logic. This timing interval logic is layed out in the Bentley manual. Both track and motor must be in the same place at installation to ensure proper co- functioning. If your motor is sluggish, perhaps tearing it down as I did, filing off the rust, lubing up the bushings and gears will help. It is tricky in there, but a good mechanical mind and set of hands can handle it. john '90 G60 X 2, California Black and Alaska Blue From corrado-l-owner@teleport.com Sat Aug 26 10:03 PDT 1995 Received: from mailer by fshpp1 with SMTP (1.38.193.4/16.2) id AA13258; Sat, 26 Aug 1995 10:03:25 -0700 Return-Path: Received: from desiree.teleport.com by UG.EDS.COM (PMDF V4.3-10 #4) id <01HUIWT9D6000011G2@UG.EDS.COM>; Sat, 26 Aug 1995 10:00:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by desiree.teleport.com (8.6.10/8.6.9) id JAA14120 for corrado-l-outgoing; Sat, 26 Aug 1995 09:57:43 -0700 Received: from uudell.us.dell.com (uudell.us.dell.com [143.166.224.6]) by desiree.teleport.com (8.6.10/8.6.9) with SMTP id JAA14115 for ; Sat, 26 Aug 1995 09:57:41 -0700 Received: from ccmail.us.dell.com by uudell.us.dell.com (5.67/dns1.3) with SMTP id AA28945; Sat, 26 Aug 95 07:49:14 GMT Received: from cc:Mail by ccmail.us.dell.com id AA809428195; Fri, 25 Aug 95 16:18:58 CST Date: Fri, 25 Aug 1995 16:18:58 -0600 (CST) From: Ed Torres Subject: VWoA's Dumb Ass Response to Sunroof Problems! Guess what? They told me it is obviuos interference on my behalf!!! What bullshit! I asked the rep Betty at 1-800-822-8987 (VWoA Customer Service Number) what the hell did that mean that a bird flew into the path of the sunroof while it closed or i contorted myself to stop it from opening while at the same time holding the close button on the damn thing!!! Well Gents, she put me on hold & then came back to tell me to take the car into the dealer again & they will "repair" once & for all. We better start putting some pressure on VWoA or they are going to screw us left & right & if you have had the problem call the above no. & complain. Power is in the hands of the many dudes & maybe your sunroof hasn't screwed up but boy it will & if your out of warranty when it happens, Boom! they are going to make you payyyyyyyyyy! Anybody that calls to complain should tell the rep that they know from the internet what the problems all about & be rest assured some VW schmuck will start monitoring our club. All for the better I hope. Let me know guys if you call & flame VWoA. Remember, together we stand & divided we will fall and hard on our wallets!!! Later dudes, t.g.i.f.:-)
