Paper Three
• Paper Three (ten percent of the course grade) calls for students to write a complete (five-paragraph minimum) essay which identifies the specific demographic characteristics of the audience of a popular magazine and to prove that they are right about the identification.
• The assignment: Browse your local library's stacks or bookstore's shelves to find and acquire a print magazine with which you are unfamiliar--online magazines are unacceptable for this assignment! After reviewing the articles, the authors, the advertisements, the pictures, and other elements of the magazine, write an essay which identifies the audience demographics of the magazine and which supports that identification by specific reference to the major and minor details of the magazine.
• Paper Three should be approximately 750 words in length.
• Critical Reading, Critical Thinking Chapter 6 is devoted to inference, and The Little, Brown Handbook discusses audience in several sections--check the index.
• Papers will be evaluated 1) on the quality of thesis and supporting argument; 2) on proper use of relevant, reliable, and sufficient evidence from the magazine; and 3) on the quality of overall written expression.
• Samples of Paper Three and additional
notes on Paper Three will be available in
the Weekly Assignments area of the Blackboard site.
• Do not forget that weekly Blackboard
instructional content is an
integral
part of your writing process for Paper Three; textbook readings and
notes, chats, COW posts, the peer edit, and other discussion boards
play an important role in your success on this assignment.
