Paper Two

• Paper Two (ten percent of the course grade) calls for students to summarize and then to evaluate ONE of the following readings:

"Down with Casual Fridays!" on CRCT 254-255
"Shot in the Arm" on CRCT 260-262
"Spanking Is Becoming the New Don't" on CRCT 296-299
"The Invisible Rich" on CRCT 303-305
• The assignment:  Pick any ONE of the readings listed above.  Write a one paragraph summary of it so that someone who has never read it will know what it is titled, who wrote it, and, most important, what it says.  Write another paragraph evaluating the article.  Remember that the "Thought and Discussion Questions" following the reading in CRCT may be helpful in your formulation of an evaluation.

• A sufficiently developed Paper Two will be approximately 500 words in length, with the first paragraph shorter than the second paragraph.

The Little, Brown Handbook Chapter Seven contains important information on writing summaries and on evaluation.  Additionally, much of the early material in The Little, Brown Handbook is devoted to writing academic papers.  Be sure to take notes as you read these chapters.  Additionally, a "study guide" for evaluating essays is available in the "Evaluating a Piece of Writing" page, available in the Weekly Assignments area of the Blackboard site.

• Papers will be evaluated 1) on the quality of the summary; 2) on the quality of the controlling idea and supporting  evaluation; 3) on proper use of relevant and sufficient detail in the evaluation; and 4) on the quality of overall written expression.

• Do not forget that weekly Blackboard instructional content is an integral part of your writing process for Paper Two; textbook readings and notes, chats, COW posts, the peer edit, and other discussion boards play an important role in your success on this assignment.

• Samples of Paper Two will be available in the Weekly Assignments area of the Blackboard site.
