Not all backgrounds are available everywhere. Some are limited to certain locales, cultures, or races. The table below gives a brief description of the available backgrounds.

| Alchemist | A maker of potions serving a patron in a city. |
| Assassin | A professional killer, despised by all. |
| Astrologer | An advisor to a noble patron. |
| Bard | A highly respected pagan story-teller. |
| Beast Master | Not just any animal handler, but a person who maintains a close and mystical relationship with animals. |
| Courtier | A refined nobleman. |
| Craft Worker | A commoner who practices a craft. |
| Druid | A pagan priest. A practitioner of one of the Elemental Colleges of Magic. |
| Enchanter | An elven magician. |
| Fisher | A commoner who fishes for a living. |
| Forester | The caretaker of a noble's forest. |
| Healer | A lone hermit, or a healer serving a community or a noble patron. |
| Herder | A commoner who tends flocks or herds. |
| Illusionist | An elven magician. |
| Knight | A mounted warrior of high social status who serves a liege lord. |
| Laborer | A commoner with no particular skills. |
| Mechanician | A maker of mechanical contraptions. |
| Merchant | A buyer and seller of goods. |
| Minstrel | A common entertainer. |
| Monk | A Christian monk. |
| Noblewoman | The wife, sister, mother, or daughter of a nobleman, or a lady in waiting attending a noblewoman. |
| Nun | A Christian nun. |
| Peasant | A commoner who works in the fields or as a household servant. |
| Plant Tender | An elven commoner, the equivalent of a peasant. |
| Priest | A Christian priest. |
| Rune Priest | A Wotanic priest. A practitioner of the College of Rune Magics. |
| Sailor | Like it says. |
| Scop | The Saxon equivalent of a minstrel. |
| Shaper | A dwarven practitioner of the College of Shaping Magics. |
| Sorcerer | A practitioner of the College of Sorceries of the Mind. |
| Spy | Low-life scum who engages in deceitful practices for others. |
| Squire | A young knight-in-training who serves a knight. |
| Thief | Like it says, although halflings prefer to say "Expert Treasure Hunter." |
| Troubadour | A knight who practices the courtly arts. |
| Warrior | A barbarian warrior. |
| Wizard | A practitioner of the College of Summonings. |
