Rules to Chi Sao

The goal of Chi Sao is to form an foundation from which you, the practitioner, can create good habits and reactions in combat situations.

     Chi Sao is meant to be an exercise, not a sparring contest.  A student should put more attention into applying proper technique than actually trying to hit your partner.  The goal of Chi Sao is to form an foundation from which you, the practitioner, can create good habits and reactions.  Please follow this advice in your practice of Chi Sao.  As with any other exercise, there are rules that must be obeyed.  I notice a lot of students have a misunderstanding of the rules of Chi Sao.  The following is a list of rules which are prioritized; one being the most important and five being the least.

1.  The practitioner must maintain central line with technique and strikes.
2.  The practitioner must have contact with your partner.
3.  The practitioner must always move from on technique to another, thus never stopping.
4.  The practitioner must use the five phases of energy to apply Wing Chun techniques.
5.  The practitioner must apply Wing Chun techniques, from your forms, at all times.

     Please follow these rules in your practice.  It would creately improve your skill as a Wing Chun practitioner.

Speed, is it the key to Power?

  Speed is the essential factor of force or power. Force is equals Mass multiplied by Acceleration, F = ma.  A large stone is dropped on a pane of glass from a height of 3 inches will not break the glass, however, a small pebble thrown at great speed will break it.
  It is also important to relax the muscles during movement as relaxed muscles move faster than tense muscles.  Reaction force, breath control, balance, focus and relaxation of the muscles cannot be ignored as these are the factors that contribute to the speed of the movement and these must be well co-ordinated to produce the maximum power.

If you now relate to Physics....

                                        P = (½mv²) / t
P = Power
½ = is a constant
m = Mass
v = Velocity(SPEED)
t = time taken to do the action

  This clearly shows that speed is the most important factor in gaining power.  If the mass was increased by a factor of 3 and speed is constant then Power is increased by a factor of 3, but, if speed is increased by a factor of 3 then Power is increased by a factor of nine!

Testing Policy

You must achieve 80 or above to pass a pillar test, but the points deductions will be as the following:

3 point deduction for lack of knowledge such as sequence of movements and academics.

2 point deduction for a lack of skill in applying technique or theory.

1 point deduction for each mistake repeated.

This grading system will help you to understand your mistakes on your test.  Each pillar deductions will add to your total score.  You must grade every pillar that you have pass in previous testing.  This ensures quality of skill and instructions.

Testing will occur at the end of each semester.  Any student that thinks he/she is ready to test before the end of the semester may notify me for a private testing date.  If you fail a test, you may retake the test at a later time at a private testing or the end of the next semester.
