June 2, 2000The temperature dropped a bit after sundown but did not get really comfortable till after midnight. Despite the poor night's rest I was up at 6:30 AM.
After yesterdays overindulgence I decided to not do anything terribly strenuous and took the "easy trail" to the view point of "Delicate" arch. This is the arch depicted on Utah's auto license plate and is indeed impressive even from a half mile away. I also went to the "Windows district" ( NO! it is NOT underwritten by Bill Gates.) that easily has more arches per acre than any place I can imagine. Since Arches NP is the highest concentration in the world, this must be the "epicenter" of the natural arch world. At one point I stood in one place and could see FIVE arches within easy view. You can even walk completely around some and through others. Disney could not have laid it out better.
While wandering around the windows district I ran into a man wearing an "Iron City" T-shirt! I asked him where he was from in Pittsburgh and he said that while he was not from Pittsburgh, his parents were and they had sent him the shirt. Since this was to be an "easy" day, I drove into Moab a bit after noon to get gas and ice. I am going through a bag of ice a day in the heat. This has a bonus attached in the form of lots of ice cold water that is much appreciated in the dry heat. I am not particularly impressed with Moab. Like a lot of towns that have recently cast their lot with the tourist trade, things are expensive and the service not very good. Yesterday at "Wendy's", every order I saw filled had something wrong that required an adjustment by the clerk. At the supermarket, as I stood in the express line to bye ice, the clerk left the register for two of the three customers in front of me. Once to go out the front door to do god knows what. With clear skies and temperatures in the100's I have grown to regard the sun as an enemy. You do not dare go anywhere without sun block, water and a hat. Despite using a lot of ice, I have yet to have to remove any excess water from my cooler!
The campers across the road from me are a puzzle. They have two vehicles, a pickup truck with a cap on the rear and a van camper. Nothing too strange in that since vans and campers are both common. However, the pickup is also carrying a ~12 foot row boat and the camper is carrying an ~18 foot canoe! What they plan to do with these is the puzzle. In the park there is no standing water except seeps and temporary washes and potholes. The Colorado river forms one boundary of the park but here is no access from within the park. It is at least a 25 mile drive to anyplace they could float them. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has campsites right on the river, and you would think they would camp there if they wanted to go boating. On the other hand the aluminum boats probably make fair sun shades. The wind picked up a bit around sundown and blown most of the annoying flies away. |
