St.
James Chapter, NSDAR was organised on the centennial founding date of
the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, 11th of
October 1990, with eleven Organising Members. The Chapter energetically
supports all of the National Society programmes and committees. In
addition, our Chapter has developed its own programmes and committees
to reflect the interests of our members and the needs of our
communities.
Our Chapter is a NSDAR 'service' Chapter. We have four Regular business
meetings a year but meet more frequently in support of our charities
and projects and for social events.
St. James Chapter took its name from the 'Court of St. James',
which is the title of official British diplomatic postings to the
United Kingdom. Benjamin Franklin was the first to hold this post from
the United States. Coincidentally, the first Christian apostle-martyr
James is Patron Saint of Pilgrims. (NSDAR is a non-religious affiliated
Society.)
The Chapter celebrates the traditional American holidays as well as the
British holidays and festivities. We also celebrate the 11th October
with a visit to some of the charities we support and a party! Our
traditional Chapter Thanksgiving is a sit down feast with husbands,
children, relatives and friends on the Sunday following Thanksgiving
Day.
We sponsor Organising Jamestown Society, National Society Children of the American Revolution.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a
non-profit, non-political, service organisation dedicated to the
promotion of Historic Preservation, Education and Good Citizenship
Endeavours. Membership is a unique opportunity to establish one's
lineage and heritage as a descendent of one (or more) who furthered the
American cause in the American War of Independence. American
citizenship is not a requirement for membership. We are an American
Registered Charity and donations to the Chapter are American
tax-deductible. In 1992, St. James Chapter was invited to join under
the umbrella of the (British) National Council for Voluntary Service
and remains an active participant.
