Jenny See-Wai Lee
‘See-Wai’ is Ms. Jenny S.W. Lee’s Chinese name, which was carefully chosen by her mother.
Customarily, Chinese families select a name that they hope will express its traits in the child. 'See-Wai' is based
on the Cantonese dialect pronunciation and literally translated to mean, ‘perceptive insight’.
The ‘See’ and the 'Wai' convey wisdom and compassion.
Artist's Statement:
"I am a biologist, observing life with an artist’s eye. I strive to preserve what I see through my paintings and photography.
As an American-born, Chinese, I am attentive of how one's eyes can be colored by another's veil, sewn by external influences.
Art frees us and ignores rigid perceptions. My artwork serves this purpose of revealing the essence in our experiences
highlighted by people, places, and activities. I like to experiment with the concept of how combinations of
geometry, colors, tones, and textures trigger emotions, so that I seek to understand
what the mind perceives as beautiful, interesting and satiating."
