The Artist___________________________
Jenny See-Wai Lee
Ms. Jenny S.W. Lee and her four siblings are first generation American, born after their parents’ liberation from Communist China. Although her birthplace is Brookline, she was raised in the quiet suburbs of Newton, Massachusetts, in a traditional Chinese household where she looked through the eyes of two cultures and blended their values. From the inhibiting conservative upbringing she was attracted to the field of science with its formal methodology constraining and its imaginative quest for knowledge. From the liberating lack of American boundaries, Ms. Lee discovered an imagination that found fulfillment in art. She learned arts and science together establish a single, dynamic entity – art lends insight to science and science lends insight to art. Both can satisfy a need for exploration and intuitive leaps. As an artist, she is intrigued by trying to understand the moments in people's lives that lead them to their passions.
Ms. Lee's studies in Biology and Psychology at Boston University influenced her to have an analytical outlook on life. Her past professional experience in the biopharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in Cambridge entailed work in cancer research, diabetes and metabolic diseases, and the development of therapeutics. Currently, she is researching the underlying components involved in infectious diseases.
To further explore the emerging world of collaboration between the business and the creative communities, she completed the unique Creative Continuum graduate program, a joint offering of Massachusetts College of Art & Design (MassArt) and Bentley McCallum Graduate School of Business. There, she was able to actively utilize her creativity and knowledge of business strategy to generate solutions for large corporations and small, independently owned businesses.
The same entrepreneurial spirit that led her to take this program also led her to numerous art commissions. Her eclectic projects included: murals; logo designs; website designs; digital image editing; book illustrations; portraits; and photography of travel, events, products, and interior design. Ms. Lee’s artworks have won many awards and have been selected for national and international juried exhibitions.
Ms. Lee's studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts houses her collection of past works and works in progress. She acquired an intensive, independent studio experience by participating in an artist-in-residence program in Amsterdam held at an Old World art school near the city's historic center. She acutely focused on the process of art-making and experimented with ideas and mixing of media. Conjunctively, Ms. Lee applied her thoughts and skills in art to that of photography and video making. She expanded her knowledge of commercial and editorial photography at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City. Aside from making art, photographing, writing, and traveling the world, she also draws inspiration and enjoyment from reading books that express novel ideas, composing piano music, volunteering, and practicing martial arts. She especially loves hiking anywhere - in the forest, mountains, and in the canyons.
Ms. Lee’s art demonstrates the essence of her experience, the “perceptive insight” for which she is named.
