January 19, 9:20 a.m.— Everything I did with the website from December 5, 2004 to January 18, 2005 disappeared. I’ll try to catch you up on what you missed: broken toilet (now fixed), frozen water pipes (then
unfrozen, frozen, unfrozen, and currently frozen again), a pull in the new carpet in my office (not fixed yet).
February
14, 10:52 a.m.— Last night, I walked in on someone else’s
birthday party. Jill and I...arranged (I'm 99% sure) to meet at the Jazz club….I
arrived at the appointed time and walked in the door, where I was greeted by somebody saying "Are they coming?" I was
like, who? I don't know. They said "the birthday boy." I said I didn't know about any birthday…..As
soon as I could, I made my way back outside and called Jill….In the end, we met at my house and watched TV.
March
6, 12:31 p.m.— One week down, one to go on the 5 & 5:30.
The new producer is doing well. She did the 5:30 on Thursday and Friday while I did the 5:00. So far, so good. I'm also working on a project for the ND. He's
having me coordinate a series about the local heroin problem.
April
3, 10:11 a.m.— On Saturday night, Jill and I were just about
ready to sit down with some wine and watch a movie, when the phone rang. It was the ND calling to ask me to come in
to help with flood coverage (this was also the day the Pope died). So I go in. I had just walked into the newsroom,
didn't even have my coat off yet, when Rachel says, "You're taking over the 11." And the ND says, "Can Rachel have your
socks?" She was going out to do a live shot from a part of Scranton that always seems to flood, and she hadn't worn
socks. So, I gave her mine.
May
24, 12:44 p.m.— So, my boss calls me into the office yesterday
to talk about something, and I end up mentioning that I've been feeling tired lately. One of the reasons, I say, is
that I'm bored…. By the time I walked out of the office, I had committed to doing a half-hour show about heroin or drugs
or something like that…. More work will make me less tired? Right.
June
23, 8:58 a.m.— Jill stopped by the house on Tuesday evening
to let out KT. Jill said that, as she was leaving, my neighbor from across the street approached her and said, "You're
not Jennifer!" Good to know they're looking out for me, I guess.
July
15, 9:09 p.m.—Starting on July 6, I became "acting" Executive
Producer. The ND tells me that he likes what I'm doing. He also told me today that the job is down to me and a
guy who used to work here.
August
14, 8:38 a.m.—Went to a party yesterday. The featured
guests were current and former employees of WNEP-TV…. It was good to catch up with everybody….The new/former EP
starts on Monday….All I want now is a schedule that doesn't change for at least a year!
September
4, 10:14 a.m.—On Saturday, I drove down to the Harrisburg area
in the morning to meet my old racquetball friends. Only one of them knew I was
coming, so the others were quite surprised when I showed up at the gym. We played for about 2 hours, then went to Madge's
house for a picnic….After that, I met one of my friends from WHP for coffee. We talked a lot about the station
and about the former ND/current chief photog. He has an inoperable brain tumor….He's only about four years older
than I am.
October
4, 1:00 p.m.—For the past nine days, my parents' Scottie stayed
with KT and me. For the first week, everything went OK. But then, on Sunday morning, I heard grrrr, grrr, grrr coming from the dining room. Chrissy was going after KT. I separated them and took KT up to the bedroom, where I realized she
had a bloody nose! Chrissy was ignored the rest of the day, while KT recovered.
The evil Chrissy is now back where she belongs.
October
23, 8:38 a.m.—It's been a week since the barn party at my former
news director's place….I spent some time with him just before I left and made sure to tell him how much I had learned
from him. I'm glad I did that. He seems to be handling everything as well as can be expected, and he's already
talking about next year's party.
November
12, 7:11 p.m.—Tuesday was election day…. I went in at
9AM, and didn't get finished til 3:00 the next morning. Then, I went back in for a few hours….When I got
home Wednesday afternoon, I took a box up to the attic and discovered that the cap for the exhaust fan blew off….Basically,
I now have a big hole in my roof….Remind me again why I thought buying a house was a good idea?
