"Desperate Housewife" Felicity Huffman earned an Oscar nomination for her role in this 2005 film, which just happened
to have her husband, William H. Macy, as Executive Producer.
Huffman plays Bree Osbourne, a person who used to be named Stanley, but who is now living in L.A. and is just a week
away from a sex change operation. But, if you'll pardon the pun, everything changes when Bree gets a phone call from
the NYPD. They have Stanley's son in custody and need someone to come get him.
Well, Bree/Stanley didn't even know she had a son. Nevertheless, next thing you know, she's at the precinct
in New York to get him. Turns out Toby is a drug-using male prostitute, so unwanted that the police release him on $1.00
bail.
The bulk of the movie follows Bree and Toby as they drive back to L.A. with stops at Toby's hometown - he told her not
to go there - and Bree's family home. All the while, Bree never tells Toby who she is until a big line has been crossed.
Overall review: ** I know this movie got a lot of awards and nominations, but I don't see what all the fuss was
about. Bree is just days away from her reassignment surgery, so you would imagine that she has been living as a woman
for several years. Yet, Huffman plays Bree as someone who's ready to fall off her high wedge heels at any moment.
Bree's also been through a lot of college classes, yet manages to do some not very bright things. Maybe that's why I
didn't particularly like Bree. And, I can't say I liked Toby any better. Quite honestly, I'm surprised they made
it back to L.A. at all.
